At halftime of the Aquinas women's soccer game against Indiana Tech last Saturday (Sept. 22), the new Aquinas College Fight Song was revealed and the winning lyricist was announced. In a contest that began this summer and was open to all Aquinas students, faculty, staff, and alumni, Barbara Witham McCargar was voted the winner and credited as the author of the new Fight Song lyrics.
With more than 20 submissions that were voted on blindly – with no names attached – by a committee comprised of current AQ faculty, staff, and students, McCargar's entry was chosen to take place as Aquinas College's new Fight Song, replacing a rarely-used version from the 1960's.
McCargar – a 1977 Aquinas graduate and currently the Associate Professor of Music at AQ – titled her submission, Vict'ry for the Saints! The song was played by the new AQ Athletic Band and sung by the college choir - while fans also received the lyrics and participated in the ceremony - for the very first time at halftime of last Saturday's game, which the Saints went on to win in double overtime, 1-0.
Here are the lyrics to Vict'ry for the Saints! (click here for a PDF version of the lyrics)
Shout it out Aquinas,
Maroon and White to fly!
With hard fought competition,
Integrity and pride,
The Saints will win with courage
And hold the Pillars high
In Dominican tradition,
With vict'ry for our side.
Musical Interlude:
Go Saints! Go Saints!
We will win with courage
And hold the Pillars high
In Dominican tradition,
With vict'ry for our side.
With her winning entry, McCargar was presented with a $1,000 check – courtesy of the Aquinas Office of Advancement – and will receive a plaque with her new lyrics. The lyrics will also be on a larger plaque installed inside the Sturrus Center for AQ students and fans to learn for years to come.
