Saints Take Two of Three Games at Rosemont Tournament

AQ tops Saint Francis (7-1) and Saint Mary (10-6) on day two

After falling in a pair of opening day contests on Thursday night (Jan. 30), the Aquinas softball team rebounded to win games two and three on Friday (Jan. 31) at the Rosemont Tournament in Illinois. AQ fell in the opening game of the dome tournament on Friday to Judson (7-1) before bouncing back and defeating Saint Francis (7-1) and Saint Mary (10-6).

Aquinas completes the seven-game weekend tournament against Goshen (2:00 p.m. ET) and Roosevelt (6:30 p.m. ET) on Saturday (Feb. 1).

The opening game against Judson was scoreless into the fourth inning when AQ took a 1-0 lead as Izzy Dawson scored on a Leigha Morse RBI double. Judson responded with a six-run home half of the fourth and scored the final seven runs of the game. The Eagles outhit Aquinas, 10-8.

Despite the loss, Morse posted a 3-for-3 effort and the run-scoring double. Dawson and Jordan Buckingham also doubled in the loss, with Buckingham finishing 2-for-3. Leah Ash and Kayla Fessenden nearly split the pitching duties, with Ash allowing five runs in 3.1 innings. She totaled four strikeouts. Fessenden gave up two runs in 2.2 innings.

Official stats have not been yet made available for all games of the tournament, including AQ's 7-1 win over Saint Francis in the afternoon.

Aquinas turned a 2-0 deficit against Saint Mary into a 3-2 lead with a Brooke Wila two-run single and a Kallie Sears RBI single in the second inning. The Flames responded with four runs in the bottom of the third and took a 6-3 advantage.

In the top of the fifth, AQ exploded for seven runs on six hits. A two-run double from Jordan Humitz and an RBI two-bagger from Taylor Charon tied the game at 6-6. Wila put the Saints in front with an RBI triple and Aquinas added run-scoring singles from Taylor Borkowski and Natalie VanderHagen to close out the seven-run frame. Neither team would score again, as AQ kept the Flames off the board for the final four innings.

Sears finished 3-for-3, while Wila, Vanderhagen, and Borkowski added two hits apiece. Wila tallied three RBI and Humitz delivered a pair of ribbies, while Wila and Aubrie Benward each scored twice.

Ash collected the win with 4.2 innings of scoreless relief, scattering just four hits and notching three strikeouts. She relieved Marisa Loya, who allowed four earned runs in the opening 2.1 innings in the circle.
