The Aquinas men's volleyball team earned a quick 3-0 sweep of visiting Lawrence Tech on Wednesday night (Feb. 12) in the Sturrus Center, as the #9 Saints topped the Blue Devils in straight sets. AQ had little trouble after a competitive first set, winning the match by scores of 25-19, 25-12, and 25-17.
It was the fourth time the teams have played in the last two seasons, with Aquinas winning all four meetings by 3-0 victories. AQ is now 11-4 on the year and 3-0 in WHAC play, while Lawrence Tech dips to 2-6 on the season and 0-3 in league action.
On Wednesday, the Saints hit .292 with 39 kills and just 13 errors, while limiting LTU to a .084 hitting percentage and only 27 kills against 19 errors. AQ also held a large 10-2 advantage in aces, a 41-31 dig margin, and a slight 6-5 edge in total blocks.
Zane Moothart led all players with 13 kills and just one error, hitting .545 in the win. He added five digs, two block assists, and a pair of service aces.
Matthew Glass took nine swings and
Will Duellman had eight attacks; both players recorded six kills and zero errors. Duellman hit .750, while Glass connected at a .667 clip; each player had a block assist.
Joshua Boothroyd totaled six digs, five kills, two aces, and a block assist.
Ruben Lopez totaled six digs and three kills, while
Robert Valerio recorded five total blocks (two solo), four digs, and three kills.
Colby Elder handed out 26 assists to go with five digs and an ace.
Matthew Richmond posted seven assists, three digs, and two aces.
Sean Kelley chipped in two kills and two digs.
Lawrence Tech held a lead for a portion of the first set, leading 9-7 and looked in control at 19-16. However, the Blue Devils did not score again, as the Saints finished the set with a 9-0 run that featured four kills from Moothart, an ace from Lopez, and a Valerio-Moothart rejection.
AQ took a 9-4 cushion in set two and used a big 5-0 run to extend the lead to 18-8. Kills from Duellman and Boothroyd ended the frame in a 25-12 win. The Saints scored the first four points in set three and pushed out to an 8-3 advantage. LTU never got closer than four points the rest of the way, as Duellman's late kill was followed by a combined rejection from Glass and Duellman to seal the win.
On Friday (Feb. 14), the #9 Saints host #4 Lourdes in a top-10 matchup with the top two teams in the WHAC. The Gray Wolves won both regular season meetings last season and topped AQ in the conference championship match before the Saints earned revenge and swept Lourdes 3-0 at the NAIA National Tournament during the team's incredible postseason run.
