On an originally scheduled off-day, the Aquinas softball team notched a pair of victories on Tuesday (Mar. 10) at the Tucson Invitational Games in Arizona. After having games cancelled on Sunday (Mar. 8) due to inclement weather, the Saints defeated Roosevelt by an 8-0 score before knocking off Kansas Wesleyan, 6-2.
AQ evens its overall record to 9-9 on the season and the Saints look to extend their winning streak on Wednesday (Mar. 11). Scheduled to play three games, Aquinas takes on (RV) Jamestown at 12:00 p.m. ET and 6:30 p.m. ET, sandwiched around a 4:30 p.m. ET game against Doane.
In the opener against Roosevelt, AQ scored in four of its six at-bats, including three-run innings in the first and sixth frames. Kallie Sears began the scoring by stealing third base and scoring on a throwing error for the early 1-0 lead. Jordan Humitz later delivered a two-run homer to left field, scoring Izzy Dawson for the 3-0 advantage.
Taylor Charon doubled to left field in the second inning to bring in Jordan Buckingham for the 4-0 edge. The score would stay that way until the fifth, when AQ scored on an error and Hannah Hasley added a run-scoring single to score Charon for the 6-0 cushion.
The final runs of the game came on a two-run single from Taylor Borkowski to give AQ the mercy rule victory. Aquinas outhit the Lakers, 9-2. Sears and Humitz each went 2-for-3, with Humitz and Borkowski driving in two runs apiece. Eight different Saints scored in the win.
Mia Loya was the benefactor of the offensive output, as she earned the win and gave up just two hits in five innings. Leah Vaughan worked a 1-2-3 sixth inning to help seal the victory.
Borkowski gave AQ an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second against Kansas Wesleyan, as she singled home Maddie Dryps. The Coyotes tied the score, but AQ made it 3-1 with an RBI single from Haley Aldred in the fourth inning.
It was 3-2 in Aquinas' favor, when Leigha Morse gave AQ some insurance runs with a two-run single in the top of the fifth. Humitz added a run-scoring single for the 6-2 lead and the final tally of the contest.
The Saints held a 10-4 advantage in the hit column, with a 3-for-4 effort from Dawson. Borkowski went 2-for-3 and Morse drove in a pair of runs.
Leah Ash tallied the victory with 6.1 innings of four-hit ball, allowing two runs (one earned). She recorded two strikeouts and gave way to Marisa Loya, who recorded both batters she faced to finish the game.
