Saints Top Dakota Wesleyan in Rain-Shortened Action

Aquinas takes 6-1 lead, holds on for 8-5 victory

Although the Aquinas softball team had its second and third games rained out on Thursday (Mar. 12), the Saints played just enough of its opening game against Dakota Wesleyan and earned an 8-5 victory. AQ jumped out to a 6-1 advantage and held on through the rain delay, collecting a five-inning complete game win.

The Saints have won five of their last six games to improve to 12-10 overall with the win over Dakota Wesleyan (8-13). AQ's later games on Thursday against Texas Wesleyan and Dakota State were cancelled due to inclement weather.

Jordan Humitz continued her recent streak with a three-run homer in the top of the first inning to give AQ the early lead. Taylor Charon delivered an RBI single in the third inning, with a second run scoring on the base hit. When Natalie VanDerHaegen scored on a wild pitch moments later, it gave AQ a 6-1 advantage.

The Saints' lead was still 6-3 in the fourth inning when Sydney Dawson and VanDerHaegen delivered RBI singles to push Aquinas to an 8-3 cushion. Dakota Wesleyan scored twice in the fifth inning, but the game entered a rain delay and was far enough along that AQ earned the win when the game was called.

Aquinas posted a 12-5 advantage in hits, as Humitz, VanDerHaegen, Izzy Dawson, and Leigha Morse collected two hits apiece. Humitz and Morse both scored twice, with Humitz notching three RBI on her first-inning roundtripper.

Marisa Loya tossed 2.2 innings in the circle and allowed three runs (one earned) on three hits. She walked two and struck out two. Leah Ash threw the final 2.1 innings, giving up two unearned runs on two hits.
