Aquinas Athletics Announces Newest Hall of Fame Class

Class features six storied individuals and a pair of outstanding teams

The Aquinas athletic department announced on Wednesday afternoon (Mar. 25) the latest group of Saints scheduled to be enshrined into the Coach Terry Bocian AQ Athletic Hall of Fame. The first full athletic class inducted since 2016, this group consists of six individuals and two teams, all of which excelled during their AQ athletic careers.

The newest class of inductees includes the following individuals: Ashley Aspinall (softball, 2005-09), Jackie (Braspenninx) Ehnis (women's basketball, 2003-07), Kurt Huizenga (baseball, 1993-94), Paul Lauer (men's basketball, 1987-90), Pedja Lazic (men's basketball, 2005-09), and Vicky Sackett (women's track and field, 1997-2001). Two teams will also be enshrined, including the 1984-85 women's basketball team and the 2004 men's cross country team.

"We are excited to celebrate and honor those individuals and teams that have been selected for induction into the Terry Bocian Aquinas Athletic Hall of Fame class of 2020," commented Nick Davidson, Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Athletics. "We have a rich history of athletic success and it is great to celebrate those past achievements as a community."

Aspinall was named the WHAC Player of the Year three times (2007, 2008, 2009) and was a two-time All-American for the AQ softball program. She ranks first at Aquinas in 17 categories, as the owner of nine career hitting records, along with holding eight single-season offensive marks.

Braspenninx ranks third in Aquinas women's basketball history in both points (1,966) and rebounds (836). The 2006 WHAC Player of the Year, she is AQ's all-time leader in blocked shots (269) and holds four of the top-five single-season marks in rejections.

Huizenga played two seasons after transferring to Aquinas and was an All-American in both years. He ranks in the top-10 in AQ history in six career offensive categories – including a program-best .443 batting average – despite playing just two seasons for the Saints.

Lauer averaged 26.5 points per game during his career, which is still the highest average in men's basketball history. He graduated as the fourth-leading overall scorer and 30 years later, still ranks ninth all-time. In the 1988-89 season, Lauer scored a school-record 917 points, which included a 55-point game.

Lazic is the only First Team All-American in men's basketball history, doing so in 2009 – the same year he was named the WHAC Player of the Year and a member of the WHAC All-Defensive Team. He ranks second in AQ history in rebounding (857) and is seventh in career scoring (1,728).

Sackett is the first female track and field athlete to earn All-American honors during all four years of eligibility. She broke multiple school records and still ranks in the top-five in four categories nearly 20 years later. A winner of multiple WHAC championships, her 600-meter indoor school record stood for 18 years.

The 1984-85 women's basketball team owned a 27-3 overall record, setting still-standing marks for most wins and fewest losses in a season. Aquinas averaged more than 75 points per game that year, the second-highest scoring team in school history. The Saints defeated Spring Arbor for the program's first NAIA District 23 Tournament victory. They will be the first women's team enshrined in the AQ Athletic Hall of Fame.

The 2004 men's cross country team finished as runner-up at that year's NAIA National Championships, which is tied for the best NAIA Nationals finish in AQ athletics history. The Saints also captured the regional title and the WHAC championship, in which Aquinas runners placed one through seven to record a perfect score of 15 points.

There are currently 59 individual inductees and six teams in the AQ Athletic Hall of Fame, prior to this group's induction.

Originally, the group was scheduled to be inducted on April 24, 2020, but the ceremony was recently postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak. The induction ceremony will be rescheduled when appropriate.
