The Aquinas men's volleyball team enjoyed a quick 3-0 victory on Saturday afternoon (Mar. 7) in Lebanon, Tenn., as the #10 Saints swept the home Phoenix to begin the four-match spring break trip. AQ used scores of 25-17, 25-18, and 25-16 to tally its 11th sweep of the year.
Playing for the first time since a 3-0 sweep at Indiana Tech on Feb. 22, the Saints will play three more match over the next four days. With the win, AQ improves to 13-5 on the season, while Cumberland falls to 11-12. The Phoenix had defeated WHAC opponent Lawrence Tech 3-0 earlier in the day.
Aquinas had little trouble on Saturday and were far more efficient. The Saints hit .294 as a team with 40 kills and just 15 errors; Cumberland managed only 22 kills against 25 errors for a -.036 attack clip. AQ was also better in assists (39-21), aces (4-0), digs (31-25), and blocks (8-1).
Zane Moothart put together a great all-around performance with match-highs of 10 kills, three aces, and four block assists. Moothart hit .500 with just two errors in 16 attempts and picked up three digs.
Ruben Lopez added nine kills, seven digs, and a block, while
Joshua Boothroyd posted eight kills and just one error, to go with three block assists and three digs.
Robert Valerio notched six kills in 12 attempts and tallied three block assists.
Colby Elder neared a double-double with 29 assists and seven digs, while adding two kills and a service ace.
Daniel Soliz provided three kills in four swings,
Matthew Richmond dished out eight assists, and
Matthew Glass secured four block assists.
Josh Evers and
Kelsey Yogi each picked up four digs.
Aquinas heads into a top-10 matchup on Sunday (Mar. 8) against #2 Campbellsville. The #10 Saints will face off with the Tigers in Campbellsville, Kentucky at 4:00 p.m. Campbellsville will be the sixth ranked opponent (the top-10 nationally) that AQ has played this season.
