Over the past five years, the Aquinas athletic department has continued its storied tradition of athletic success in the form of individual national championships, incredible postseason runs, WHAC championships, record-breaking performances, and a tremendous number of athletic and academic All-America honorees.
Â
We wanted to provide our fans with an enjoyable look back at some of the best moments from all of our athletic programs since 2015. Over the next two months, we will highlight a few programs each week - 25 programs in total - and provide a reminder of why it's great to be an Aquinas Saint.
The NAIA hosted its first-ever Dance National Championships in 2017, and the Aquinas College Competitive Dance team looked to make a splash at the inaugural event. The Saints qualified for the event by finishing first in every event they competed in, including the NAIA Regional Qualifying Tournament. By capturing the Regional Championship, the Saints booked their trip to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where the event would be held at Oklahoma City University.
After the preliminary round on Friday night, the Saints found themselves in second-place with a score of 87.97, trailing only Midland University. Scores from the preliminary round counted towards 25 percent of a team's overall score. During the final round on Saturday, which made up 75 percent of the total score, the Saints put up another strong score, finishing with a total of 86.63. That final tally was good for second-place, once again trailing only Midland. The Saints bested third-place Baker (Kan.) by less than a single point to claim the runners-up position.
The dance team's impressive finish at the finals gave the team one of the highest national finishes of any team in Aquinas history. Individually, Ali Alderman and Kassidy Boldt were both honored as All-Americans, while
Lucy Dinsmore and Mariah Fulton were named honorable-mention All-Americans. Only one school, Midland University, had more student-athletes earn All-American status than the Saints' four. Tori Mashour was honored as an NAIA Daktronics Scholar-Athlete.Â
