The Aquinas women's basketball team falls in a non-conference battle against IU-Northwest on Tuesday evening (Dec. 7) in Gary, Indiana. After only allowing 17 points and leading by three at half, the Saints allowed the Red Hawks to score 37 in the second half and take the 54-40 win over AQ.
AQ now has a record of 8-7 on the season, while IU-Northwest, an NAIA school out of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference, improves to 8-3 overall.
Defense was the name of the game in the first half as both teams only managed seven points a piece in the first quarter and then Aquinas outscored IU-Northwest 13-10 in the second stanza. The Red Hawks got the offense going in the second half, while still playing good defense against the Saints. IUN was able to score 19 and 18 points in the third and fourth quarters as AQ scored 10 points in each quarter.
Marissa Brady gathered her eight double-double of the season for the Saints by scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Brady was also able to add four blocks throughout the game and a steal.
Brighton Miller was able to score nine points for AQ, while collecting three rebounds and two assists.
Mauriya Barnes was the only one able to score off the bench, scoring eight points to go along with her two steals, rebound, and assist.
Eliza Brown had the most assists at three, while scoring six points.
Daz'Sha Day ended with a stat line of three steals, rebounds, and points a piece with two assists as well.
Jordyn Wigg scored the other four points and added three rebounds.
The Saints shot 23.0% from the field, 4-25 from downtown, and went 8-11 from the free throw line. IU-Northwest connected on 40.0% of its field goals and made 2-9 three-point attempts, while also going 12-16 from the charity stripe. The Red Hawks held a 45-28 rebounding advantage, while also holding an 16-9 lead in assists. The Saints had more blocks (5-3) and steals (8-3).
Aquinas will host its final game of the 2021 calendar year by welcoming Taylor to Sturrus Center on Saturday (Dec. 11), with tip-off scheduled for 1:00 PM.
