Saints Women Drop Two in Saturday’s Doubleheader

The Aquinas softball team traveled to South Bend, Indiana on Saturday (Mar. 13) to take on the Titans in a non-conference doubleheader. IU-South Bend scored four in the first inning of both games, making it hard for the Saints to rally back. Aquinas dropped both games to IUSB and fall to a 2-2 overall record.

Getting walked and stealing two bases to lead off for the Saints was Brooke Wila. A sacrifice bunt to the pitcher by the second batter, Kallie Sears, scored Wila and earned Aquinas the first run of the game. IUSB quickly responded as they tallied four runs in the bottom of the inning.

Each team was able to score one in the third and fourth innings, giving IUSB the 6-3 advantage. The Saints' tallied one more in the top of the six, this time by Courtney Hardin on a sacrifice fly from Taylor Borkowski. The Titans responded again, scoring three and extending the lead to five to clinch the win.

The Saints were led by Sydney Dawson and Hardin who both went 2-3 in the first game and each hit a double in the contest. Hitting .500 for Aquinas were Izzy Dawson, Jordan Humitz, and Borkowski.

Aquinas struggled in the first inning of the second game as IUSB hit a two-run home run and scored two more times to get out to a large 4-0 lead. The Saints remained scoreless until the fourth inning while being down 5-0.

Wila started the fourth with a triple to right center field. Sears came to the plate hitting a bomb to right field, earning two RBIs and putting the Saints down 5-2.

With Breanne Adamczak and Wila on base, Sears came up to bat again hitting one to centerfield. The wild play scored Adamczak from second base, Wila from first base, and Sears herself. The three RBIs from Sears put Aquinas within one, heading into the seventh inning down 6-5.

Aquinas was unable to score in the top of the seventh, earning the home IUSB the win. IUSB improves to 2-6 overall.

Sears led the team with four RBIs and two runs attached to her true home run and the wild play in the sixth. Wila went 2-4 with two runs and a stolen base. With three stolen bases on the day, Wila became AQ's career record holder in stolen bases totaling 88.

The Saints are back in action this afternoon (Mar. 14) as AQ hosts Saint Francis in a non-conference doubleheader at Cornerstone. First pitch is set for 1:00 PM.
