The Aquinas softball team hosted Judson for a non-conference doubleheader at Cornerstone on Saturday afternoon (Mar. 20). The Saints earned the big 5-0 win as Leah Ash pitched a two-hitter. In the second game, pinch hitter Darrien Roberts homered in the bottom of the sixth to help the Saints claim the big 4-3 win. Aquinas improves to a 7-3 overall record.
After two scoreless innings in the first game, AQ came to the bottom of the third with back-to-back singles from Brooke Wila and Kallie Sears. With both of them in scoring position, Izzy Dawson singled to centerfield scoring Wila. Jordan Humitz then doubled to centerfield scoring I. Dawson and Humitz to grab the 3-0 lead.
The Saints scored another in the bottom of the fifth as Roberts single scored Sears. Wila doubled to right field in the sixth to score Taylor Borkowski. A three up three down in the top of the seventh clinched the 5-0 victory for the Saints. Ash allowed only two hits (a single in the first and one in the fifth) and earned herself the win.
Sears led the Saints hitting 3-4 with two runs, a double, and stolen base. Roberts finished hitting 2-3 with an RBI. Humitz went 1-2 with two RBIs. Wila was 2-4 with a run, a double, an RBI, and two stolen bases. I. Dawson posted a run and an RBI, hitting 1-3.
In the second game, Aquinas started the first by scoring I. Dawson as Haley Aldred singled to left field. The Eagles and Saints were scoreless in the second and third innings. Judson brought the bats in the fourth scoring three. In the bottom of the fifth, AQ scored two (Wila and Sears) to tie the game at three all.
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, pinch hitter Roberts homered to left field to grab the 4-3 advantage. The Saints closed out the game in the top of the seventh and earned the huge 4-3 victory to complete the sweep. The two losses drop Judson to 4-14 overall.
The Saints were led by shortstop Haley Myers who went 3-3 with a double and a stolen base. Humitz hit 2-3 and earned an RBI. Roberts had the solo home run earning herself a run and an RBI. Sears and Aldred both went 1-3 in the game. Kayla Fessenden earned the win on the mound allowing no runs and only one hit. Fessenden also posted two strikeouts.
Aquinas returns to the field Thursday (Mar. 25) as the Saints travel to Upland, Indiana to take on Taylor in another big non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
