The Aquinas men's volleyball team knocked off #9 Lourdes in the 2021 regular season finale on Saturday (Mar. 27) at the Sturrus Center, with the Saints winning the final three sets to earn the 3-1 victory. AQ dropped the first set to the one-loss Gray Wolves, but stormed back to take the last three sets and win by scores of 22-25, 25-19, 25-20, and 25-21.
Saturday's result moved Aquinas to 5-11 on the season and 4-8 in WHAC play, while Lourdes falls to 12-2 overall and 10-2 in league action. The Gray Wolves finished as regular season WHAC co-champs, but AQ was the far better team on Saturday.
Though Lourdes held a slight 45-44 advantage in kills, but Aquinas hit .294 with only 14 errors, while Lourdes owned an .089 attack mark and committed 34 errors. The Saints were also dominant defensively with a 15-7 advantage in total blocks and stayed close in digs, trailing Lourdes by a 38-34 mark. The Gray Wolves also led in aces (10-2) and assists (44-40).
Julian Armendano posted a match-high 19 kills and hit .429, while adding five digs.
Robert Valerio also had a great match with 13 kills, only one error, and a .480 hitting percentage. He also recorded eight digs and four block assists.
Daniel Littleton notched seven total blocks and six kills.
Daniel De La Rosa and
Gavin Jonker each tallied seven block assists. Jonker also totaled three kills and both of AQ's service aces.
The all-time leader in digs in AQ history,
Josh Evers celebrated Senior Day by picking up a team-high 11 digs in his final home match.
Matthew Richmond handed out 34 assists to go with six digs, three block assists, and a kill.
