The Aquinas softball team hosted the Racers in a big WHAC doubleheader showdown on Tuesday afternoon (Mar. 30) at Cornerstone. The Saints and UNOH split as the Racers took game one by a 10-8 score. Aquinas battled back with a vengeance, earning the big five inning 10-1 mercy in the second game.
In the first game, UNOH quickly scored twice after doubling in two RBIs. The Saints were scoreless until the bottom of the second, tallying three runs off of a single from Sydney Dawson, and a double each by Brooke Wila and Kallie Sears. Aquinas headed to the top of the third leading 3-2. The Racers rallied again scoring two to bring themselves up a run.
Aquinas rallied in the bottom of the third, scoring four on UNOH's two errors. Darrien Roberts posted a 2-run homerun over the centerfield fence. With two on, Wila tallied her second double of the game earning an RBI. Sears batted another in for the Saints to earn a 7-4 lead.
It was big bats for the Racers in the top of the fourth as they posted six runs. Aquinas tried to respond in the bottom but only tallied one. UNOH and the Saints were scoreless the next three innings to earn the Racers the 10-8 victory.
Roberts led the Saints hitting 3-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Wila went 3-5 with three doubles, two RBIs, and a run. S. Dawson hit 2-4 with two runs, two RBIs, and a stolen base. Jordan Humitz went 2-4. Relieve pitcher Grace Maguire allowed just two hits and posted three strikeouts while starter Leah Ash also tallied three strikeouts.
To start the second game, AQ's defense went three up, three down. It was Aquinas all the way as the Saints got off to an early 4-0 lead. After Sears reached on an error, Izzy Dawson hit one over the left fence to post a two-run homer. After a Humitz single and Roberts double, Kaelyn Stafford doubled to right center scoring both (4-0 AQ).
Another three up, three down top of the inning for the Saints defense gave the AQ offense a quick turnaround. The Saints rallied off another five runs as Humitz hit a three-run homerun, Roberts scored on a throw down to second base, and Taylor Borkowski scored on a failed pick off attempt.
Another score came from the Saints in the bottom of the third on a solo homerun from I. Dawson. Despite the Racers scoring one in the top of the fourth, they couldn't cut into the large AQ lead. Aquinas earned the five-inning 10-1 mercy victory. The split moves the Racers to 13-9 overall, 2-2 WHAC. The Saints are now 10-4 overall and have a 3-1 conference record.
I. Dawson led the second game hitting 3-3 with two home runs, while also posting three runs, three RBIs, and a double. Humitz went 2-3 with three RBIs, two runs, and a home run. Roberts and Borkowski both went 1-2 in the second game. AQ starter Kayla Fessenden grabbed her third win of the year allowing only one run and four hits. Fessenden also struck out four Racers.
The Saints were supposed to return to the field Thursday (Apr. 1) and face Trinity Christian, but those games have recently been postponed. Aquinas will play again on Saturday (Apr. 3) as the Saints travel to Howell, Michigan to take on Cleary in another WHAC doubleheader. First pitch is set for 11:00 AM against the Cougars.
