The Aquinas women's softball team traveled to Howell, Michigan to face Cleary in a big WHAC doubleheader on Friday afternoon (Apr. 23). The Saints' big bats drove in 22 runs in the two games earning two wins over the Cougars by 11-3 and 11-1 scores. The pair of wins improves AQ to 23-7 overall, 15-3 WHAC.
In game one, AQ tallied a score in the first as Jordan Humitz hit a home run to right field. Matching the score was the Cougars in the bottom of the inning. Aquinas came alive in the fourth inning as the Saints notched five runs. A double from Darrien Roberts scored two, another double from Natalie VanDerHaegen drove in another two runs, and a single from Sydney Dawson gave the Saints the big 6-1 lead.
Aquinas came back in the top on the fifth tallying two more runs on a two-run home run from Courtney Hardin. The Cougars posted two runs in the bottom of the sixth while Aquinas notched three more runs to seal the deal in the first game. AQ topped Cleary by an 11-3 score.
Humitz hit 3-4 with three runs and two RBIs, hitting a double and a home run. Roberts notched two RBIs while hitting 2-2. Hardin also posted two RBIs and went 1-3 at the plate with two runs. Izzy Dawson hit 2-4 and S. Dawson went 2-3. Kayla Fessenden (9-0) maintains her undefeated year, pitching five innings and two strikeouts. Leah Ash also added two strikeouts.
The second game was started by Hardin who hit an in-the-park grand slam to grab AQ the quick 4-0 lead in the top of the first. Cleary tallied their only run in the bottom of the first.
Aquinas went on to score seven runs in the top of second. Kallie Sears, Roberts, and Hardin all batted in a run. With two on base, Leigha Morse hit a three-run homer to right center field. With both teams scoreless the rest of the game, AQ claimed the huge five-inning 11-1 victory. The two losses move Cleary to 9-19 overall, 4-6 WHAC.
Leah Vaughan earned the win on the mound for the Saints in game two. Offensively, the Saints were led by Hardin who drove in five runs, hit 2-3, and added two runs. Morse earned three RBIs on her home run. I. Dawson went 2-3 at the plate and posted two runs. Humitz hit 1-2 with two runs.
The Saints remain on top of the league's standings and return to play on Sunday (Apr. 25). Aquinas will host Concordia in a big WHAC matchup at Cornerstone starting at 1:00 PM.
