AQ's Hot-Streak Continues, Improving to 4-0

AQ rallies to top Judson 3-1, Sweeps Adrian to improve to 4-0

The (RV) AQ Saints men's volleyball team continued their hot start to the season. Aquinas played two more matches today (Jan. 15) at Mol Arena. AQ rallied back to win three-straight sets against Judson for a 3-1 victory. In the second match of the day, Aquinas picked up its second sweep of the MMVI tournament with a 3-0 victory over Adrian. The Saints are now 4-0 in their 2022 season.

In the first match against Judson, the Eagles came out strong against the Saints, earning a 25-15 victory in the first set. The Saints would respond in an emphatic manner, earning wins in the second and third sets by scores of 25-19 and 25-18. AQ was well on its way to a victory in the fourth set until Judson rallied late in the set to bring the score back level at 24-24. Daniel Austin picked up an ace to bring the score to 25-24, followed by the Eagles failing to return the service the next point. The 26-24 set score gave the Saints a 3-1 victory to move the team to 3-0 on the season.

Aquinas topped the Eagles in nearly all statistical categories, leading in kills (50-39), hitting percentage (.208-.181), assists (48-36), aces (9-4), and digs (39-38). Judson managed more blocks, leading eight-to-seven.

Julian Armendano led the team for the third-straight game with 20 kills (.300). Not only was Armendano a menace offensively, but he racked up seven digs defensively.

Joshua Boothroyd continued to be the tag-team combo with Armendano, totaling 13 kills himself (.226). He also contributed two assists, three aces, four block assists, and four digs.

Leo-Paul Rousseau got the start as the setter for this match and played well, picking up 40 assists, a kill, two block assists, and six digs.

Kelsey Yogi was the team-leader in digs with 12 along with three assists.

The Saints were back in action at 5:00 PM today to wrap up the MMVI tournament. AQ beat the Adrian Bulldogs in the first set by a score of 25-19. Adrian was never able to rally back as Aquinas picked up a 25-23 victory in the second set and a 25-16 win in the third set. The second sweep for the Saints in the MMVI tournament moves AQ to an impressive 4-0 start to the season.

The Saints led the Bulldogs in every major statistical category, leading in kills (38-30), hitting percentage (.408-.184), assists (35-28), aces (5-4), digs (25-19), and blocks (6-4).

Armendano continued his dominant streak this tournament with a team-leading 13 kills (.435), an ace, five digs, and a block assist.

Boothroyd added nine kills (.412) of his own, along with an assists, two digs, and a solo block.

Rousseau and Matthew Richmond shared the setter duties, adding up a combined 34 assists between the two of them.

Matthew Glass had an impressive .571 hitting percentage on five kills. He also contributed a pair of block assists in the winning effort.

The red-hot Saints are set to play again on January 21st for WHAC conference play at the Sturrus Center. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM.
