The Aquinas women's basketball team made it as the sixth seed to the WHAC Tournament, but fell to Siena Heights on Tuesday evening (Feb. 22) in Adrian, Michigan. AQ's defense kept them in the game through the first half and within striking distance, but SHU created distance in the third quarter on its way to 60-47 win over AQ.
Aquinas scored the first bucket of the game by
Daz'Sha Day, who had the most points in the quarter at five. AQ had three different leads within the first 10 minutes of the ball game, but Siena Heights also grabbed the lead three times including the final one. SHU held a 13-10 lead at the end of the quarter and hit two threes late to take the advantage from AQ. In a quarter where only eight field goals were made by both teams combined, Siena Heights did manage to build its lead up to 10 with 4:02 remaining in the second. The AQ defense shut out SHU for the remainder of the half, while a jumper from
Destini Lewis and a trey from
Eliza Brown cut the deficit to five heading into the locker room.
Marissa Brady led the way offensively with six points in the first half as SHU held a 24-19 at the break.
The fight was there for AQ as they were able to trim the lead down to one with 4:29 remaining in the third quarter. However, this is where Siena Heights separated itself by outscoring Aquinas 12-2 for the last 5:31 of the period. The deficit grew to 11 as both Brady and Brown had four points a piece in the quarter. The offense finally came alive for AQ in the fourth by scoring 17 points on 7-13 shooting. SHU was able to keep the comeback at bay as they also had an efficient quarter by making 8-11 baskets, including 3-4 from downtown, for 19 points. At the end of it, Siena Heights advanced to the semifinals of the WHAC Tournament.
The three ball was the difference as Siena Heights made three of them in all four quarters. SHU shot the ball at a 43.4% clip and went 12-25 from behind the arc. AQ had a 37.5% shooting percentage after going 18-48 from the field.
Brady collected her 18th double-double of her senior campaign after finishing with 14 points, 10 rebounds, two blocks, and a steal. Day also had nine points and three boards, while Brown contributed seven points off the bench.
Jordyn Wigg dished out the most assists with three as Lewis (6),
Mauriya Barnes (4),
JaKarri Alven (3),
Isabel Reemsnyder (2), and Wigg (2) scored the remaining points.
Siena Heights also secured more rebounds (34-29), assists (14-9), and steals (6-3) than Aquinas, while both teams had three blocks a piece.
AQ finishes the season with a 15-16 overall record (10-10 WHAC) in 2021-22. The offense played well at home as the team went 9-5 in Sturrus Center and the defense always kept them in ball games by limiting opponents to 57.6 points per game. AQ will lose seniors
Marissa Brady,
Daz'Sha Day,
Destini Lewis, and
Jordyn Wigg to graduation, but will bring back six juniors, three sophomores, and six freshman to the 2022-23 squad.
