The women's basketball team traveled to Ann Arbor, Michigan to take on Concordia University this afternoon (Feb. 5). The Saints took a slight lead into the fourth quarter but could not quite close out the game. The Cardinals rallied back to take the game by a score of 45-40.
Aquinas is now back at .500 on the season with a record of 13-13. AQ is also sitting at 8-8 this season in WHAC play, good for sixth in the conference standings. Concordia is in fourth place on the WHAC table with an overall record of 15-9 and a conference record of 11-4.
The game started off as a defensive battle between the two sides. AQ was held without a basket until 5:49 in the first period.
Marissa Brady started off the scoring with a quality look in the paint. Daz'sha Day picked up a couple of good looks herself towards the end of the quarter, scoring four points. Day and Brady accounted for seven of the nine points scored in the first quarter as the teams ended the first quarter of play tied at nine-to-nine.
Brighton Miller kicked the second quarter scoring off with back-to-back three pointers.
Emily Cline made a couple of layups right at the end of the quarter giving her four points off the bench in the second. Concordia went blow-for-blow with Aquinas throughout the quarter and ended up scoring the last basket of the half, giving CUAA a 21-19 lead heading into halftime.
Brady dominated in the third period, scoring seven points in the paint, and adding five rebounds to her stat line.
Jordyn Wigg was efficient with her opportunities, converting on her layup chances. Aquinas played strong defense in the third period, giving the Saints a slight advantage at the conclusion of the third quarter. The Saints held a 33-31 advantage going into the fourth and final quarter.
Unfortunately, Aquinas was outscored 14-7 in the final quarter as the Cardinals clamped down on defense. Concordia converted a couple of big three-point chances and the Saints couldn't quite come back.
Brady was her typical dominant defense self, picking up 12 rebounds and two blocks. She also put 12 points (5-13 FG) on the scoreboard. Her double-double is her 16th of the 2021-2022 season.
Miller had a solid game herself, scoring nine points and converting two-of-three on her three-point attempts. She also contributed three steals and an assist in the effort this afternoon.
CUAA held the advantage over AQ in most statistical categories, including points (45-40), shooting percentage (.294-.277), free throws (14-8), rebounds (41-28), turnovers (16-17), and steals (11-6). AQ had more three-point shots converted (2-1) and the teams both had three blocks.
The Saints are back in action on Monday (Feb. 7) for a home matchup against Madonna. The game is set to begin at 7:00 PM in the Sturrus Center.
