The (RV) AQ men's volleyball team returned to the court after a ten-day break tonight (Mar. 15) to take on the Adrian Bulldogs for the second time this season. Aquinas entered the match winning seven of its last eight matches, including a 3-1 road victory over the Adrian Bulldogs. The hot streak would improve to eight wins in the last nine matches with a 3-0 sweep over Adrian tonight. AQ would win with set victories of 25-16, 25-20, and 25-20. The Saints held control of the match throughout its entirety. This win improves AQ's record to 16-6 on the season with a 6-4 WHAC record.
The Bulldogs came out of the gates hot and built an early lead over the Saints. Aquinas would quickly eliminate that lead off the serve of
Daniel Soliz to level the set. The Bulldogs would score a couple of points, but Aquinas would come roaring back and take a 15-10 lead, forcing an Adrian timeout. Adrian would score two points coming out of the timeout but attacking errors would plague the Bulldogs as Aquinas quickly took a commanding lead. The Saints would take the first set by a score of 25-16 after
Joshua Boothroyd slammed the ball down for the final point.
Adrian would take an early advantage in the second set and, similar to the first set, Aquinas would come fighting back. A few kills from
Julian Armendano leveled the score at 8-8. Each side would trade points with attack errors coming from both sides. AQ would eventually take a 20-16 lead over the Bulldogs following a nice run off the serve of
Kelsey Yogi, forcing an Adrian timeout in an attempt to slow down the AQ momentum. The timeout wouldn't help, as the Saints would take a 24-17 lead over Adrian. The Bulldogs would score three straight to narrow the Saints advantage to 24-20, but a service error would end the set at 25-20 in favor of AQ. The Saints would enter the third set with a commanding 2-0 match lead.
Aquinas would jump out to an early 6-2 lead and the match appeared to be over early in the third set. However, the Bulldogs would hang around in the set a massive 4-0 run would tie the third set at 15s. Boothroyd would take over down the stretch, picking up four massive kills to push Aquinas over the top.
Chase Gil would end the match with a kill to give AQ another 25-20 set victory and a 3-0 sweep.
The Saints held a statistical advantage over the Bulldogs in all categories, leading in kills (38-26), hitting percentage (.359-.096), assists (35-25), aces (5-4), digs (27-24), and blocks (6.5-5).
Daniel De La Rosa had a great match, picking up eight kills on an extremely impressive .727 hitting percentage. He also contributed two digs, a solo block, and two block assists.
Boothroyd led the team in kills with nine (.438) while also adding an ace, six digs, and a block assist to the score sheet.
Armendano had a fairly quiet night, getting seven kills (.278), an assist, and four digs.
Richmond played very well, averaging over ten assists per set (32 total), while also picking up a kill, an ace, three digs, and four block assists.
The Saints are back at it tomorrow (Mar. 16) with another home match, this time against Cornerstone. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM in the Sturrus Center.
