The Aquinas softball team got its 15th straight win of the season against Cornerstone in a nonconference bout on Wednesday (Mar. 16) at the CU Softball Field. The Saints took game won handily 7-2 and then dropped game two as the Golden Eagles walked it off, winning 4-3. AQ now has a record of 18-4 on the season, while CU has started 2022 out 5-6.
GAME 1: Aquinas 7, Cornerstone 2
The Saints had the long ball going in the first game has three hits left the yard in the first four innings. The first came off the bat of
Courtney Hardin who hit her third of the year over the left field fence for a solo shot in the first inning. The next one was hammered by
Jordan Humitz who put the game out of reach with one swing of the bat. Her fourth home run this season was a grand slam in the second inning that put AQ up 5-0.
Hardin then hit her second of the game and fourth of the season in the fourth inning as another solo home run made the score 6-0. The Saints were able to go up 7-0 in the fourth inning as
Kaelyn Stafford scored on a wild pitch after reaching base earlier in the inning.
Kayla Fessenden improved to 7-1 this season after throwing four and a third scoreless innings and only giving up a single hit, while striking out two.
Grace Maguire pitched the final two and two-thirds innings as Cornerstone scored it only two runs in the seventh inning. Maguire allowed two runs on three hits and struck out four.
Izzy Dawson, Hardin, and Stafford all had two hits a piece, while Humitz finished with four RBI and Hardin added another two.
GAME 2: Cornerstone 4, Aquinas 3
The Saints jumped out to a 3-0 lead after scoring in the second and third innings.
Darrien Roberts first singled down the left field line that brought around
Halee Holman and
Emily Cline to score. Humitz continued her big day with an RBI triple to right field that plated Dawson for the third run.
Leah Ash was cruising through six innings and came out for the seventh to attempt the complete game. Four hits later, the Golden Eagles had the bases loaded and one run had scored.
Leah Vaughan came in from the bullpen to try and get the last two outs, but CU was able to empty the bases on a two-out triple for the walk off win. Ash finished her night going six and a third innings and allowing four runs on seven hits with three strikeouts.
Humitz and Stafford collected another two hits with Roberts driving in a pair.
Aquinas' doubleheader at Saint Xavier on Friday (Mar. 18) has been canceled due to potential weather. The Saints have two more doubleheaders scheduled against Judson on Saturday (Mar. 19) and IU-South Bend on Saturday (Mar. 20) with both being on the road.
