The Aquinas women's tennis team earned a WHAC victory over Lawrence Tech on Saturday (Mar. 26) in Southfield, Michigan to snap a three match losing streak. Playing with only five players, the Saints were able to take a close 4-3 win over the Blue Devils. AQ improved its record to 8-11 (2-2 WHAC) on the season, while LTU falls to 11-10 (2-4 WHAC) on the year.
The Blue Devils took the doubles point by winning two of the three matches. LTU was able to take down the formidable duo of
Sofia Gomez and
Joska Volder in the #1 match 6-2 as it was only their third loss on the season. The #3 doubles match was forfeited by the Saints for not have enough players to compete and the #2 doubles match-up went unfinished as Lawrence Tech already won the two matches needed.
Needing to win four of the six singles matches to gain the conference victory, AQ did exactly that even while forfeiting the #6 match after being down a player. Gomez was the only Saint that did not win after falling in the #1 singles 2-6, 2-6.
Carlota Arzabe and
Jenna Hausman won both of their matches convincingly in straight sets. Arzabe improved to 8-4 on the season after a 6-2, 6-2 win in the #2 singles, while Hausman gained her third win of the year in the #5 match with a 7-6, 6-2 victory.
Volder had her hands full in the #3 singles match after going to three sets. She won her seventh match in a row in the 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win.
Mimi Pacheco won her #4 singles match after her opponent retired with Pacheco up 4-0 in the first set to win her third match of the season.
