AQ Rolls Past Roosevelt in 3-1 Victory

Aquinas wins by set scores of 25-18, 18-25, 25-10, and 25-18

The (RV) AQ men's volleyball squad continued their four-match road stand today (Mar. 3) with a big victory against Roosevelt University. The Saints won the first set by a comfortable margin of 25-18 in the first set, followed by the Lakers responding with a 25-18 victory of their own. Aquinas came back with an emphatic 25-10 third set and closed out the match with another 25-18 set for the 3-1 victory. This win moves Aquinas to 13-6 on the season with a 6-4 WHAC record.

The Saints came out firing and led 6-0 to start the match. Sean Kelley, Daniel Soliz, and Matthew Glass combined for eight kills on their way to a quick 25-18 set victory. The second set started off close with the set tied at 9-9. However, the Lakers would start to break away and score 10 of the next 13 points. The Saints would be unable to overcome the 19-12 deficit and the Lakers would tie the match at 1-1.

Julian Armendano would take over in the third set and slam home seven kills. The third set was all Aquinas as the Saints would steamroll Roosevelt by a score of 25-10. Armendano's onslaught of kills did not end in the third set as he would pick up ten kills in the fourth set. Roosevelt appeared to be in control of the third set as they led 14-8 heading down the stretch. However, Aquinas would go on a 9-0 run late in the fourth set to obtain a 23-17 advantage. AQ would close out the set and the match with a 25-18 victory, winning the match 3-1.

Aquinas held an advantage in every statistical category, leading in kills (50-27), hitting percentage (.244-.028), assists (49-25), aces (8-5), blocks (10-6), and digs (48-37).

Armendano had the most kills on the team with 19 (with a .581 hitting percentage). He racked up 17 kills in the third and fourth sets. He also contributed a solo block, a block assist, and four digs.

Leo-Paul Rousseau and Matthew Richmond shared setting duties in today's match. They combined for 40 assists, two kills, an ace, a block assist, and 14 digs.

Sean Kelley had the most blocks on the team with two-and-a-half blocks. That consisted of two solo blocks and a block assist. Additionally, he had two kills, an ace, and four digs.

The Saints have a tough day tomorrow with two road matches against #6 Missouri Baptist and a rematch with #14 Saint Xavier. The first match is set for 2:00 PM and the second is scheduled for 4:00 PM. Both matches will be played at the Goodman Center in Chicago, Illinois.
