AQ Tennis Concedes Both Matches to NCAA DII GVSU

The men lost 7-0, while the women were also shutout 6-0

Allendale, Mich. — The Aquinas men's and women's tennis teams faced tough competition on Friday afternoon (Oct. 6) against NCAA Division II foe Grand Valley State.

Both Saint squads got overpowered with the Lakers winning the men's match 7-0 and women's match 6-0 in Allendale, Mich.

The closest match for the men came at No. 1 doubles with Tom Gangov and Josep Coll Llopis falling 6-3 to Chimo Minguez and Victor Lopes.

Coll Llopis won the most sets in singles play with a 6-2, 6-2 loss to Denys Zamaraiev. AQ's Jackson VanBergen won three sets in singles play, falling 6-1, 6-2 to Ignasi Garros.

Gangov and Brandon McEachern each won two sets and Mariano Arroyo won one.

While the men played the traditional three doubles and six singles matches, the women played two doubles and five singles. The result was much the same, as GVSU swept all seven matches.

AQ took sets off the Lakers in both doubles bouts. Hannah Lourido and Alyssa Jack were a tad more successful by winning two sets to suffer a 6-2 defeat to Olivia Huang and Anna Soteras.

Sofia Gomez and Carlota Arzabe had a better showing in their singles matches. Gomez lost 6-3, 6-1 to Vasileia Griva and Arzabe dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision to Amanda Diaz.

This was the first time the two regional schools have faced each other on the tennis courts since 2017.

Aquinas looks to rebound and gain more experience with another fall contest at Spring Arbor on Oct. 14. The match is scheduled to start at noon for both teams.
