Aquinas Men's Swim and Dive Splashes Past Olivet

AQ men's swim and dive team had a dominant display to win its first head-to-head competition this season

Olivet, Mich. — The Aquinas men's swim and dive team traveled over to Olivet on Saturday (Oct. 7) for a head-to-head competition. AQ showed up and showed out as they put on a dominant performance in the pool, taking home the victory. The unofficial final score was 167-58. But, due to timing issues at the pool, some results have to be adjusted and the scores may change. The following meet notes come from AQ head coach Kristy Hepp

The men's team asserted their dominance from the start of the meet, with the A relay (Evan Hurtado, Cesar Robles, Titus Smith and Matthew Dumbsky) and B relay (Ian Clapp, Tony Parlato, Baryn Robar and Collin Alward) placing first and second in the 200 medley relay.

The AQ men swept the top 3 finishes in the 200 IM, with Luke Martin snagging the win, followed by Clapp and Parlato.

Freshman Ben Szydlowski asserted his dominance in the mid-distance freestyle events, winning both the 1,000 and 500 freestyle events.

Junior Christopher Uzunoe-Chin finished in a close second in the 1,000 freestyle.

Freshmen Evan Bennett and Troy Borrero dominated the 1M and 3M diving events, finishing first and second on both boards, respectively. Bennett set school records and qualified for the NAIA national meet on both the 1M and 3M boards. Borrero also punched his ticket to the NAIA national meet on the 1M board.

Hurtado also finished first in both of his individual events, finishing the 200 freestyle with a 1:55.35 and the 100 backstroke with a 56.74. He was closely followed by Clapp, finishing the 100 backstroke with a 58.41.

Hepp had this to say about today's performance, "The depth on our men's team this year is tremendous, and we saw that play out today with their dominant win and two national qualifiers in diving events. Freshmen divers Evan Bennett and Troy Borrero will be making a huge mark at the national level, already setting records and punching their tickets to the championship meet in Georgia. Our men are on a great trajectory for a dominant season, and I'm so proud to see their hard work in training pay off with results in competition. They'll be put to the text next weekend at Bethel."

Like coach Hepp said, the Saints will be back in action next week Saturday (Oct. 14) in Elkhart, Ind., at the Elkhart Aquatic Center for a head-to-head with Bethel.
