Alexis Thomas Sets Assists Record in 93-62 Win Over Great Lakes Christian

Junior guard dished out 12 assists for new AQ single game record

Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Aquinas women's basketball team used a record-setting performance on Tuesday night (Nov. 7) to pour in its most points in a game since the 2017-18 season. 10 different AQ players scored at least four points in the 93-62 non-conference victory over visiting Great Lakes Christian inside the Sturrus Center.

Junior guard Alexis Thomas set a new school single-game record with 12 assists on Tuesday, to go with her six rebounds, five points, and two steals. Attempting just four field goals, Thomas dished out a dozen assists; more impressively she did so in just 20 minutes of action, all while recording only one turnover.

The previous school record of 11 assists was set by Kelly McEnhill (1993), Nikki Tuttle (1995), and Taelor Sanders (2012).

AQ's 93 points are the most since the Saints scored the same amount in a 93-47 win at Lourdes on Nov. 15, 2017. Totaling three 20-point quarters, Aquinas (2-2) shot 47.6 percent from the floor and drained six three-pointers. The Saints dominated in the paint to the tune of a 56-30 advantage, while scoring 22 fast break points.

Five players scored at least eight points for Aquinas, led by Alona Blackwell's game-high 24 points. She made 11-of-20 field goals in 28 minutes and added six rebounds. Ciara Hardy nearly totaled a double-double of 19 points and nine rebounds, shooting 7-of-9 from the field and 5-of-5 from the charity stripe. Four of her team-high nine boards were offensive. The Saints outrebounded Great Lakes Christian (1-3) by a 64-47 cushion.

An old-fashioned three-point play from Hardy gave AQ a 22-8 lead late in the first quarter. The Saints took a 24-13 advantage after 10 minutes. Blackwell and Hardy combined for 22 points in just the second quarter, as Hardy's jumper pushed the lead to 50-25 late in the first half. It was a 50-29 score going into halftime.

Thomas handed out 12 of the team's 29 assists; she had five assists in the first quarter and four more in the third quarter. She broke the record on a feed to Brynn Reams, who knocked down a jumper late in the third to put Aquinas on top, 69-43.

The lead grew to a game-high 36 point differential on a three-pointer from Julie Mach with 1:48 remaining, giving AQ the 91-55 advantage. 14 Saints saw the floor on Tuesday, with 13 players logging double-digit minutes in the victory.

Emily Bissett and Emilynne Braue each scored nine points off the bench. Bissett also grabbed seven rebounds and blocked three shots in 17 very active minutes. Reams added eight points and four boards, making 4-of-6 shots. Leah French tallied five rebounds, four points, and three assists, while Kenzie Burt also grabbed five boards.

Aquinas enjoys a short break before kicking off WHAC play on Nov. 18. The Saints will head to Adrian to take on Siena Heights at 5:30 p.m. in the conference opener.
