Softball Drops Two on Final Day of NAIA Leadoff Tournament

Rosemont, IL - The final day of the NAIA Leadoff tournament took place today where the Saints faced off against Roosevelt and had a rematch against #25 Saint Xavier. The Saints were topped in both games today, falling to Roosevelt 3-4 and #25 Saints Xavier 0-8 in 6 innings.

AQ falls to 3-4 after a busy start to the season.

Game 1: Roosevelt 4, (RV) Aquinas 3

Coming off a dominant victory against Bethel yesterday, AQ looked to continue their momentum competing against Chicago area based Roosevelt. After trailing from the first inning, the Saints tied the game up in the top of the fifth with a three-run inning. Roosevelt would break the ice quickly in the bottom of the fifth with one run. This would give them the victory at the end of the contest.

Roosevelt would have one run score in the first and two in the third inning before AQ would respond. AQ's first run would come from a wild pitch. Jaden Delchambre made her way home while Darrien Roberts and Courtney Hardin advanced to third and second.

Taylor Charon would single next and advance to second on an error that resulted in both Roberts and Hardin scoring. In the bottom of the fifth, Roosevelt was able to hit an RBI single to put them over the edge

AQ starter Leah Ash picked up the loss after going 4 innings and allowing 4 runs on 5 hits. She threw 69 pitches and recorded 3 strike outs.

Game 2: #25 Saint Xavier 8, (RV) Aquinas 0 (6 innings)

In a rematch against the #25 cougars, the Saints looked for retribution after falling 9-1 yesterday. The Saints were unable to do so, despite falling in six innings instead of five this time.

Saint Xavier started their scoring spree in the second inning with a 2 RBI triple to right center. They would score one more time in the inning. The cougars would score two more in the third off of a triple to center and a sacrifice fly. One more run would come in the fifth before the mercy rule would come into effect. This happened in the top of the sixth from a triple to left center that drove in the two scorers.

Kayla Fessenden was assigned the loss after pitching 5 innings and 70 pitches. She gave up 6 runs on 6 hits.

Courtney Hardin, Jaden Benschoter, and Haley Myers all recorded a hit for AQ.

The Saints will take almost three weeks off before competing again. They will play on February 25 at the St. Ambrose Tournament. These contests will take place in Davenport, Iowa.
