Orlando, Fla. — The Aquinas tennis teams continued their Spring Break Trip action on Wednesday (Mar. 15) with both teams facing off against NCAA Division III Millsaps.
The women (2-5 overall) squeaked out a 5-4 win while the men (3-5 overall) were edged out 4-5 at the USTA Center in Orlando, Fla.
Women: Aquinas 5, Millsaps 4
After picking up their first win on Tuesday against Marywood, the Saints doubled up with a second straight victory on Wednesday. AQ was scheduled to play an additional game Tuesday morning against Curry College that got rained out. The weather cleared up for the afternoon matches.
Aquinas went 4-for-5 in the single matches and split the two double matches that were played. Due to a lack of players, the Saints forfeited the No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles contests to give Millsaps two points.
Carlota Arzabe and
Mimi Pacheco won the No. 2 double (9-7), while
Joska Volder and
Sofia Gomez suffered a 8-7 (7-5) tiebreaker loss in the top pairing showdown. All four of them went on to win their single matches.
Alyssa Jack was dealt AQ's lone singles defeat in a close 6-4, 6-3 loss.
The women's tennis team finishes up their Spring Break Trip on Friday (Mar. 17) with a 6 p.m. match against IUPUI at the USTA Center.
Men: Millsaps 5, Aquinas 4
The Saints had their two-match win streak snapped in heart-breaking fashion.
In doubles, the top duo of
Tom Gangov and
Josep Coll Llopis held on for a 8-7 (7-3) win. But, lost the other two matchups by scores of 8-7 (7-2) and 8-3.
The scores weren't as close in the singles but still competitive. AQ picked up wins at No. 1 and No. 2 with Gangov winning 6-3, 6-4 over Trevor Vaccaro, and Coll Llopis claiming a 6-3, 6-2 against John Kimball.
Millsaps' depth, however, got the better of the Saints. The Majors won at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6 to grab the 5-4 victory. In the three losses, AQ's
Max Goldbeck-Lowe managed to win one set,
Mariano Arroyo fought to take eight before losing 7-5, 6-3, and
Jackson VanBergen grabbed three sets.
Nicholas Klak was victorious in the No. 5 singles match (6-4, 6-2) over Jackson Hamilton. Seniors Klak and Goldbeck-Lowe both recently reached the 100 collegiate matches played milestone.
The men's team wraps up their Spring Break Trip on Friday (Mar. 17) against Scranton. The match is scheduled to start at noon.
