Lima, Ohio — The 2022-23 campaign for the Aquinas men's tennis team came to close Wednesday (Apr. 26) with a 4-0 loss to Lawrence Tech in the first round of the WHAC Tournament being hosted by UNOH in Lima, Ohio.
The No. 4-seeded Saints (7-7 overall) couldn't replicate its 4-3 win they had over the No. 5-seeded Blue Devils (8-12) earlier this season on Mar. 24. Aquinas has finished .500 or better in each of the last two seasons after having three consecutive losing seasons from 2019-21.
After the tough to swallow season-ending loss this morning, AQ did receive a few accolades from the conference to soften the blow a little bit. Sophomore
Tom Gangov was named to the All-WHAC Second Team, first-year coach
Gunnar Peery was selected as the Champions of Character Coach for the season, four Saints made the All-Academic team and senior
Max Goldbeck-Lowe was recognized as AQ's Champions of Character.
Gangov went 9-3 in singles and 7-6 in doubles matches this season. His 9-2 record at No. 1 singles (.818 win percentage) was best in the conference this season. With his doubles partner
Josep Coll Llopis, the duo was the third-best No. 1 pairing in the conference with a 2-3 record in WHAC double contests in the regular season.
Making the All-Academic Team — juniors or above in academic standing with a 3.25 cumulative GPA and at the school for one full year — for the Saints were:
Jackson VanBergen,
Mariano Arroyo,
Nicholas Klak and Goldbeck-Lowe.
