Maumee, Ohio — The Aquinas women's tennis team fought an uphill battle all season with only five eligible student-athletes on the roster for the whole spring season. The Saints (3-10) couldn't overcome the hindrance on Thursday (Apr. 28) in the first round of the WHAC Tournament being hosted by Lourdes in Maumee, Ohio.
No. 3-seeded Northwestern Ohio (6-10) brushed off the short-handed Saints, 4-0, to end AQ's season. Due to lack of players, Aquinas forfeited No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.Â
The Saints best opportunity to win one of the seven matches that were played was at No. 1 doubles.
Joska Volder and
Sofia Gomez were up 5-2 against Neo Mafuyeka and Alizee Ripolles when the match was called off because the No. 2 doubles bout had finished in the Racers' favor. That gave UNOH the one doubles point on offer and meant the No. 1 doubles match was left unfinished.
Prior to the match, the conference office released the WHAC women's tennis yearly awards. Volder was named AQ's Champions of Character and made the All-Academic Team — junior or above in academic standing with 3.25 or better cumulative GPA and been at the school for one full year — along with her doubles partner Gomez.
The singles matches also went UNOH's way with Volder and Gomez falling (6-2, 6-0) and (6-0, 6-0), respectively.
Carlota Arzabe lost her first set 6-4 and was down 3-2 in the second when her match was called off.
Mimi Pacheco also dropped her first set 6-4 and was trailing 4-1 in the second when her match was declared unfinished.
No. 5
Alyssa Jack only got two sets in when her match against Mafuyeka ended early as well. Jack was down 2-0.
