AQ Women's Tennis Upended by (RV) Cornerstone

The Saints unable to keep up with the Golden Eagles in rivalry match

Grand Rapids, Mich. — The Aquinas women's tennis team lost 7-0 on Saturday afternoon (Apr. 8) against in-city rival Cornerstone at the Grand Rapids Racquet and Fitness Center.

The Eagles, receiving votes in the most recent Coaches Top-25 Poll, improved to 8-2 overall with the victory and completed a perfect 6-0 WHAC season to win the conference regular season title. It's the program's first WHAC regular season title.

Cornerstone took a 1-0 lead after winning one out of the two doubles matches that were played. AQ had to forfeit the third due to a lack of players.

The Saints' lone victory of the match came at No. 1 doubles with Sofia Gomez and Joska Volder defeating Sarah Daza and Camila Ibarra, 6-2. CU's Sophie Smith and Ximena Matamoros won the other doubles match, 6-1, against Carlota Arzabe and Mimi Pacheco. Gomez and Volder improved to 4-6 overall as a doubles team this season.

The five singles match were all decided in straight sets.

No. 1: Matamoros def. Volder, 7-5, 6-0.
No. 2: Smith def. Gomez, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2).
No. 3: Daza def. Arzabe, 6-0, 6-1.
No. 4: Alayna Bowman def. Pacheco, 6-0, 6-2.
No. 5: Isabella Herrera def. Alyssa Jack, 6-2, 6-1.

The No. 6 singles match was forfeited by AQ due to lack of players.

The Saints (2-8, 0-4 WHAC) have two more conference matches against Lourdes and Concordia that are waiting to be scheduled. The WHAC Tournament is scheduled for Apr. 28-29 at Lourdes.
