Grand Rapids, Mich. – The Saints hosted the (RV) Campbellsville Tigers tonight (Feb. 16) at the Grand Rapids Community College Gerald R. Ford Fieldhouse. Campbellsville entered the contest receiving votes in the national poll with a 4-2 record.
Aquinas pulled off a strong first-set victory, but the Tigers rallied back to claim the ensuing three sets. AQ's skid continued and is now 2-5 on the season.
Campbellsville 3, Aquinas 1 (19-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-13)
The Saints claimed an early advantage after a five-point run that included kills from
Noah Smith-Slosar and
Zachary Nosky. AQ continued to roll as Nosky,
Chase Gil,
Leo-Paul Rousseau, and
Jacob Davidson all recorded kills to put the Saints ahead by six.
Campbellsville could not put together a significant run as the Saints offense continued to fire on all cylinders. Aquinas hit nearly .500 in the first set on its way to a 25-19 win.
The second set started close, but a six-point run from Campbellsville put the visitors in the driver's seat. However, Aquinas fought back until a Davidson kill leveled the score at 18. Just a couple of points later, a Nosky kill gave AQ the lead late in the set.
With the score at 22-21, CU took a timeout to reset and it worked as intended. The Tigers took the next four points to take the second set and shift the momentum.
The end of the second set completely changed the mood of the match and a 6-1 run from Campbellsville to begin the third set confirmed that. AQ was unable to find a foothold in the match as the visitors ran away to third and fourth-set victories to claim the match.
