Melbourne, Fla. – The Saints went right back to their winning ways today (Mar. 10) with a Sunday sweep. AQ took down Mount Mercy for the second time this season in the early slot and then held on to win a close contest against Webber International in the later game slot.
AQ is now 10-1 on the season after the pair of wins today.
Game 1: Aquinas 4, Mount Mercy 0
AQ pitched its third shutout of the season behind the arm of
Sophia Pavese in the first game. She allowed just four hits and no runs over seven innings to improve to 5-0 this season.
Courtney Hardin started the scoring in the third frame with a two-RBI double.
McKenna Hinkle walked and then
Haley Myers singled to left field to set up Hardin's double.
Emma Houseman hit
Kami Morse home with an RBI groundout in the fourth inning to give AQ its third run.
The Saints added on their final insurance run in the sixth with a rare double steal.
McKayla Mott hit a leadoff double and then
Carson Hendrickson singled to center to put runner on the corners. With
Jessica Dobias pinch-running for Mott, the Mustangs attempted to catch Hendrickson stealing second, but Hendrickson beat the tag and Dobias beat the throw back home to score.
Mount Mercy finally generated some offense, loading the bases with three singles. However, Pavese got out of the jam unscathed for the shutout.
Game 2: Aquinas 4, Webber International 3
The Saints' scoring started with a loud second inning.
Katie Carlson hit a leadoff single and
Kaelyn Stafford walked to put two runners on with no outs. Hendrickson hit another single and advanced all the way to third while bringing in two runs after an error by the left fielder. Dobias hit the third single of the inning on the ensuing at-bat to put three on the board.
The game quieted down with strong defense from both teams. It wasn't until the fifth inning that the Warriors finally brought in a run with a pair of hits. The sixth inning then went by with six consecutive outs.
AQ added on an all-important fourth run as Darrian Roberts hit a one-out triple and Mott hit her home with a single. The Warriors responded with two runs in the seventh thanks to an Aquinas error, but a strong AQ defense locked up the final two outs to escape with the win.
Grace Maguire went the distance, pitching all seven innings. She allowed just six hits and three runs with a pair of strikeouts to improve to 3-1 on the year.
By the Numbers
Hardin and Hendrickson led the team with three hits and two RBIs over the two games. Carlson, Myers, and Mott all had two hits.
In total, AQ outhit its opponents 16-10 over the two games.
