St Mary of the Woods, Ind. – The Saints traveled down to Indiana tonight (Apr. 12) to take on the Pomeroys of Saint Mary of the Woods for their final two games of the season. AQ started the match on a high note with a 25-18 victory. However, the Pomeroys quickly rallied and claimed the ensuing three sets to win the first match of the weekend series.
Saint Mary of the Woods 3, Aquinas 1 (18-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-21)
The Saints spread the ball around well to start the match as
Chase Gil,
Connor Staats,
Zachary Nosky,
Quinn Silverman, and
Jacob Davidson all collected kills on the way to a 15-7 lead. AQ kept rolling on its way to a 25-18 victory in the first set. Aquinas tallied 12 kills and three blocks in just the first set.
The momentum began to shift at the start of the second set. SMWC jumped out to an 11-4 lead before AQ responded with a four-point run. However, the host responded with a three-point run of its own as AQ couldn't quite find a foothold in the set. Both teams traded points, but the Saints could not draw within four points of the Pomeroys for the remainder of the set.
The third set played out almost the exact same way as SMWC took an early lead and AQ could not manage to string together enough points to come back. Neither side managed more than a three-point run, but the hosts held a consistent lead throughout the set and claimed a 2-1 match advantage.
Set number four was far more competitive as the two teams stayed within two points of each other throughout the majority of the set. However, with the score tied at 17-17, SMWC managed to score five unanswered points to effectively ice the match. A series of Pomeroy errors gave the Saints a few points back, but the hosts ultimately claimed a 3-1 match victory.
