AQ Wins Game One, Falls in Game Two at Lawrence Tech

Both teams put together dominant showings in split.

Farmington Hills, Mich. – The Saints, who were originally scheduled to take on Lawrence Tech today, played a rescheduled doubleheader yesterday (Apr. 16) against the Blue Devils. AQ recorded nine hits for an 8-2 win in the first game, but the AQ bats quieted down in game two for a series split.

After today's games, AQ now moves to 29-9 and 11-5 in conference play. The Saints are now third in the conference, trailing both Madonna and UNOH.

Game 1: Aquinas 8, LTU 2

AQ got some early action on the base baths in game one. Haley Myers singled and then stole second before Courtney Hardin walked to put two runners on with no outs. Lawrence Tech managed to buckle down and force a groundout and two strikeouts, getting out of the inning unscathed.

Lawrence Tech got into some trouble again in the top of the third. A walk from McKenna Hinkle and walks from Katie Carlson and Alex Kownacki loaded up the bases with two outs. Jessica Dobias delivered a clutch single that resulted in three AQ runs after the left fielder failed to field the ball cleanly.

The Blue Devils finally put a run up on the scoreboard after a trio of singles scored a run in the bottom of the third frame. LTU brought home another in the bottom of the fifth with a double and a single to cut the deficit to just one run.

Aquinas reentered the score column in the sixth inning, starting with hits from Dobias and Carson Hendrickson. AQ was able to score a run off of a wild pitch and then Kim Sosnowski walked to runners on the corners.

The Saints brought in another run off a well-executed sacrifice squeeze from McKayla Mott. On the ensuing at-bat, Myers blew the game open with her third home run of the season, increasing the AQ lead to five. Hardin ripped a double into right field to increase the lead to six.

Lawrence Tech managed to put multiple runners on base in the sixth and seventh innings, but couldn't bring any of them home, resulting in an 8-2 victory for the Saints.

Game 2: LTU 8, Aquinas 0 (6 Innings)

Aquinas picked up its first hit of the game with a Hendrickson single, but not before the Blue Devils had two runs on the scoreboard. The Saints bats remained fairly quiet, not posting more than one hit in any inning and with all four hits being singles.

LTU added on another run in the third inning and then again in the bottom of the fourth. However, most of the damage came in the bottom of the sixth. The Blue Devils scored four runs on three hits to reach the eight-run lead threshold to end the game early.

By the Numbers

Hendrickson (3), Myers (3), and Dobias (2) were the three Saints to record multiple hits in the doubleheader. Dobias finished the series with a team-high three RBIs and Myers had two.

With her double today, Hardin now has 14 doubles on the season and is just four doubles short of her career-best doubles season in 2022.

Myers three hits today bring her to 44 hits on the season and a .373 batting average as her career season continues.

Up Next

The Saints have a busy week ahead of themselves with a doubleheader on Thursday (Apr. 18), Saturday (Apr. 20), and Sunday (Apr. 21).
