Sylvania, Oh. — The Aquinas College men's tennis team traveled to Sylvania, Ohio, to take on Lourdes in the opening round of the WHAC Tournament. The Saints had a valiant effort but were unable to defeat the Gray Wolves. Lourdes advances with a 5-2 victory over AQ.
Tom Gangov and
Mariano Arroyo had a back-and-forth contest in doubles where they won the first in a close 6-5 fashion. But the second leg went unfinished.
Brandon McEachern and
Jackson VanBergen came up half way in their contest as it finished 6-3.
Gangov continued to find success in singles as he pulled off a narrow victory in the third (6-4, 6
4-7
7, 10-5).
McEachern redefined a comeback victory as he rallied a victory in the third as well (6-1, 0-6, 6-2).
At the completion of the final contest the Saints had found success but not enough to advance in the tournament. Lourdes defeated AQ 5-2.
With the conclusion of the regular season, the WHAC has also recently released season awards.
VanBergen was awarded the Champions of Character Award. This is a nominated award that is awarded to the athlete that is identified by their respective coach as the player who best represents the five core character values of integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership.
Aquinas had four athletes named to the WHAC All-Academic team in 2024. To qualify for the All-Academic team, the athlete must possess a 3.25 cumulative GPA, be at least a sophomore in academic standing, and have been at Aquinas for at least one academic year. AQ's all-academic honorees are Arroyo, Gangov, McEachern, and VanBergen.
