Women's Tennis Ends Season in WHAC Tournament Semifinals

AQ exits the tournament with defeat to Lawrence Tech

Midland, Mich. — The Aquinas College women's tennis team competed with Lawrence Tech at the Midland Tennis Center for the WHAC Tournament Semifinals this Wednesday (Apr. 24). The Saints had a better showing than their previous bout with the Blue Devils but were still unable to come up victorious. AQ exits the tournament with a 4-1 loss to LTU. Before finding their exit, the team had defeated Lourdes in the Quarterfinals to advance with a score of 4-2.

Quarterfinals: Aquinas 4, Lourdes 2

Alyssa Jack and Megan Hearn found a final edge and defeated their double opponents with a 6-4 scoreline. 

Camryn Wiersema and Hannah Lourido also found success with a strong 6-3 showing. 

Carlota entered single swinging as she earned her win with scorelines of 6-3 & 6-2. 

Lourido held her contest to a standard as she also found a dominant finish winning in two (6-2 & 6-1).

Hearn held out and found a narrow victory in singles as her match went to the third frame (6-3, 5-7, 6-0). 

Semifinals: Lawrence Tech 4, Aquinas 1

AQ only found small victories within doubles and were unable to walk away with a paired win. 

The team had more success in singles, both Carlota Arzabe and Alyssa Jack were in the heat of competition but both contests would go unfinished. Hannah Lourido had a close bout but fell in the final stretch of the third (6-4, 6 2-7 7, 0-6).

Aquinas earned its first point from Evelynn Matzke from her win in singles (6-1, 7-5). 

With the conclusion of the contest LTU held a 4-1 advantage which saw the expulsion of the Saints from the tournament final.

The end of the season also brings word of conference awards. Azarbe was named part of the Champions of Character Team. This is a nominated award that is awarded to the athlete that is identified by their respective coach as the player who best represents the five core character values of integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership.

Both Azarbe and Jack earned All-Academic Honors. To qualify for the All-Academic team, the athlete must possess a 3.25 cumulative GPA, be at least a sophomore in academic standing, and have been at Aquinas for at least one academic year. 

Up Next

This brings an end to the Saints season. The team will now make preparations for the upcoming fall season.
