Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Aquinas College Men's Basketball team displayed resilience, teamwork, and sharp shooting en route to a 91-73 victory over UM-Dearborn on Community Hero Night at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center.
The Saints were powered by Ryan Weir, who had a career day with 17 points, including 5 of 6 from beyond the arc, along with three rebounds, two steals, and two assists. Ten different players scored in a well-rounded team effort, marking the Saints' third consecutive victory and improving their season record to 10-7 overall and 6-4 in WHAC play.
Teamwork and Big Runs Propel Saints to Victory
After a back-and-forth opening, the Saints closed the first half with a 42-32 lead. Aquinas came out strong to open the second half, going on a 9-3 run to stretch the lead.
UM-Dearborn fought back, trimming the deficit to just five points. But the Saints responded with a decisive 13-0 run, highlighted by three consecutive three-pointers, including a clutch triple by Weir that pushed the lead to 72-54 with just over 10 minutes to play. From there, the Saints maintained control and secured the win.
Balanced Scoring Leads the Way
The Saints' offensive output was a collective effort, with ten players contributing on the scoresheet. Devon Boyd led all scorers with 18 points, adding three rebounds and three assists. Ryan Weir had a standout performance, recording a season-high 17 points, shooting 5 of 6 from three-point range. Jadakiss Lewis chipped in with 16 points, three assists, and two rebounds. Caden Pokorzynski and Terrance Jones added 12 and 10 points, respectively.
The Saints were efficient on offense, shooting 56% from the field and 10 of 21 (48%) from beyond the arc.
Coach Bertoia reflects on the Win
After the game, Head Coach Ryan Bertoia praised the team's selfless play and highlighted Weir's breakthrough performance:
"Feels good. The guys are competing and keep believing in each other, and tonight another player stepped up. Ryan Weir came back from break with a different attitude, a different mindset, and good things happen to great people. He's a great kid and had a game like this."
Community Hero Night Honors
The night also served as a celebration of the community's unsung heroes. Prior to tipoff, Aquinas recognized police officers, EMTs, veterans, medical professionals, teachers, and others who make a positive impact.
Additionally, 2019 Aquinas alum Johnny Agar, who has gained national attention for his inspiring journey with cerebral palsy, was honored for his achievements. His perseverance and positivity were celebrated by the Aquinas community, with Coach Bertoia sharing, "Johnny is an inspiration to all of us. He embodies what it means to overcome challenges with determination and heart."
