Byron Center, Mich. — January can often be a challenging month for hockey teams as they shake off the rust after the holidays, but the Aquinas College Women's Hockey Team has certainly found their rhythm. After a dominant 8-2 victory over Wyoming on Thursday, the Saints extended their momentum into Friday, cruising to a 13-2 win. Eight different players scored, with four Saints recording multiple goals.
Aquinas 13, Wyoming 2
The Saints came out strong with three goals in the first period, followed by three more in the second. They capped off the game with a staggering seven goals in the final 20 minutes to secure the dominant victory.
Izzy Buckett was once again exceptional in goal, finishing with an outstanding .963 save percentage (52-54). The highlight of her performance came in the third period when she stopped 25 of 26 shots, including a pair of incredible two-on-none saves. Buckett has been a consistent force in net throughout the season and was unbeatable over the past two nights.
The scoring started early, with Paige Ike finding the back of the net at the 10:37 mark of the first period. Just nine seconds later, Alyssa Exline added another to give Aquinas a 2-0 lead. From there, the Saints never looked back.
After the game, Coach Matthew Bland praised his team's effort: "The team controlled the puck and the game tonight. We're seeing steady improvements in many areas, which is leading to the results we've been looking for."
In the final three and a half minutes of the game, Aquinas erupted for four more goals. Julia DeHondt, Reyna Dominczak, Kylie Rancilio, and Mary Fiebrandt — who scored her first collegiate goal — all found the back of the net to put the finishing touches on a comprehensive win.
The victory improves the Saints' record to 3-7 overall and 1-6 in conference play. Tonight's win was the AQ Athletics Game of the Week.
