WHAC RELEASE
Grand Rapids, Mich. — The 2024-25 season will mark the end of Women's and Men's Tennis at Aquinas College as the school stays in-line with a WHAC Conference decision.
In line with a growing national trend of addressing limited resources and economic challenges, the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) has decided to discontinue both Women's and Men's Tennis after the 2024-25 academic year.
Aquinas joins Cornerstone, Concordia, and Indiana Tech as WHAC schools making the difficult decision to remove tennis from their athletic programs. Of the conference's institutions, Lawrence Tech will be the only school to continue offering tennis as of January 24, 2025.
"This was a difficult decision for the conference," said WHAC Commissioner Eric Ward. "The pressure on our sponsoring institutions to make tennis work from a financial perspective has become increasingly difficult. Dwindling participation in the conference, struggles with roster sizes, and challenges related to indoor facility availability and affordability have all conspired to make the sport untenable for many of our schools. After consulting with administrators within the WHAC, we determined this was the best path forward."
This decision isn't unprecedented for the WHAC. The conference previously sponsored Men's and Women's Tennis from 1993 to 2001, only to discontinue the sport for a decade before reinstating it in 2011.
