Box Score Byron Center, Mich. — The Aquinas College Women's Hockey team faced a grueling test of endurance and determination this weekend, playing three games in under 48 hours. After two hard-fought losses to Lake Superior State, the Saints wrapped up the stretch with a late-afternoon match-up against Grand Valley State University. Despite being shorthanded due to injuries and the effects of minimal rest, the Saints delivered an impressive effort in a 3-1 loss to the Lakers.
Grand Valley State 3, Aquinas 1
The game started at a measured pace, but when GVSU broke the ice midway through the first period with the game's opening goal, the intensity picked up. The Lakers unleashed a flurry of shots on Aquinas goaltender Izzy Buckett, who was up to the challenge, stopping 19 shots in the first period alone. Offensively, the Saints were unable to capitalize on a golden opportunity late in the period, as the Lakers successfully killed off an AQ 5-on-3 power play that lasted nearly 90 seconds.
The second period showcased excellent defensive play and stellar goaltending from both teams. Aquinas managed to tie the game late in the period when Julia DeHondt found the back of the net, assisted by Kaeleigh Kachmarski and Reyna Dominczak.
The third period turned physical, with both teams racking up penalties. Unfortunately for the Saints, GVSU took advantage of back-to-back power plays to score twice. The game-winning goal came after a relentless sequence where the Lakers fired five shots in just three seconds, overwhelming Buckett's otherwise impenetrable performance. For the game, Buckett made an incredible 68 saves on 71 shots, finishing with a .958 save percentage.
With the loss, Aquinas falls to 3-12 on the season, but the team continues to show improvement as they fight through adversity.
