Grand Rapids, Mich. – For the 2025 Aquinas College Women's Lacrosse team, success isn't just measured by wins and losses—it's about resilience and determination. Heading into February, it was uncertain whether the Saints would even have a season. With only 10 active players, the squad fought to keep their program alive, convincing the AQ Athletic Department to allow them to compete. The mere fact that they took the field this season is already a victory.
Originally set to be played at Adrian, the game was moved to Aquinas due to scheduling changes. Despite a spirited effort, Interim Coach Kyle Goodbee's squad couldn't overcome a strong Bulldogs team, falling 16-3.
Game Recap: Adrian 16, Aquinas 3
Trailing 1-0 early, the Saints responded when Vanessa Bailey found the net unassisted at 12:16 of the first quarter, tying the game at one. However, Adrian surged ahead, ending the first quarter with a 3-1 lead.
With Adrian stretching their advantage to 8-1 in the second quarter, the Saints fought back as Mya Chickering set up Maizie Holmes for a goal. At halftime, the Bulldogs held a commanding 11-2 lead.
Aquinas' final goal of the game came in the fourth quarter when Holmes assisted on a Sophia Schmader goal. Despite the lopsided score, the Saints' defense and goalkeeping kept the game from getting further out of hand. Kennedy Stilson stood tall in net, making a remarkable 19 saves.
Coach's Take
After the contest, Interim Head Coach Kyle Goodbee remained positive about the team's progress, "Today's game was about finishing through adversity. With a lot of odds stacked against these girls, they pulled out a fantastic game. The effort and determination these ladies showed against a tough opponent—who just came off an 18-point win, was without a doubt, stellar. We will come out better than today and look to continue to build tomorrow."
