AQ Men's Hockey Starts Strong but Falls to Indiana Tech

Saints’ Early Lead Slips Away in 7-2 Loss to the Warriors

Box Score

Byron Center, Mich. — When playoff seeding is on the line, stepping up your game is necessary. Facing back-to-back match-ups against one of the top teams in the nation only adds to the challenge. After a hard-fought 7-3 loss to Indiana Tech on Friday, the Saints returned to the ice on Saturday but couldn't hold onto an early 2-0 lead, ultimately falling to the Warriors once again, this time 7-2.

No. 13 Indiana Tech 7, Aquinas 2

Much like Friday's game, Aquinas came out strong. Xavier Erickson netted two early goals, giving the Saints all the momentum midway through the first period. However, the tide quickly turned as a pair of hooking penalties opened the door for the Warriors to get on the board.

Indiana Tech capitalized on AQ's mistakes, scoring seven unanswered goals to erase the Saints' early lead. Penalties proved costly for Aquinas, as they spent too much time in the box—an uphill battle against a team with the firepower of Indiana Tech.

Special teams were a significant factor in the game. The Saints went 0-for-5 on the power play, while Indiana Tech took advantage of eight AQ penalties, converting three of their opportunities.

Coach Brandon Rozema reflected on the game, saying, "Forty minutes of solid hockey from our group, but we have to play 60 minutes to have a chance against Indiana Tech. Our start was great—being up 2-0, we had the momentum—but we have to do a better job of managing and fighting to keep it. A huge thanks to the Aquinas alumni for coming out tonight—we are very thankful for your support."

The loss drops Aquinas to 9-21-3 overall and 8-12-2 in conference play, with their playoff position still to be determined.

By the Numbers

Paying Homage to the Past

After the first period, the Aquinas hockey team honored the program's rich history by recognizing the 2017 ACHA D3 National Champions, 2018 NAIA National Champions, and 2016 ACHA D3 National Runner-ups. These teams laid the foundation for the current squad and serve as a testament to the dedication, hard work, and success that continue to define Aquinas hockey.
