Saints Sizzle in the Cold: Aquinas Dominates Olivet with 24-3 Run Explosion

Fire and Ice: Aquinas Stays Hot in Freezing Temps, Takes Two from Olivet

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Rockford, Mich. – On an absolutely frigid day, the Saints were nothing short of en fuego. Aquinas, fresh off a doubleheader sweep at UNOH, came back to take two from Olivet while outscoring the Comets 24-3 on the day, returning to their recent winning ways.

Game 1: Aquinas 6, Olivet 2

The Saints set the tone early in the opener, plating two runs in the second inning thanks to clutch RBI singles from Dawson Shearer and Logan Snelling. Aquinas tacked on another in the third before Olivet cut into the lead with a two-run homer in the fourth. Unfazed, the Saints responded immediately, capitalizing on aggressive baserunning and a fielder's choice to push the lead back to three. A bases-loaded walk in the sixth gave AQ some extra breathing room, and the bullpen did the rest, slamming the door shut on Olivet's offense.

On the mound, the trio of Sam Pollack, Kaleb Mitchelson, and Grant Martin combined for a five-hit effort, striking out eight batters along the way. Mitchelson picked up the win with two shutout innings, and Martin finished things off with a dominant 1-2-3 seventh. With clean defense behind them, the Saints cruised to the 6-2 win.

Inside the Numbers (game 1):

  • Chase Robinson stayed hot, going 3-for-3 and scoring twice.
  • Dawson Shearer reached base twice and drove in a run.
  • Sam Pollack struck out four over four strong innings.
  • The Saints played error-free baseball while Olivet committed none.

Game 2: Aquinas 18, Olivet 1

Game two was an offensive explosion for the Saints. AQ wasted no time, jumping on Olivet with a first-inning run before unleashing a six-run third frame that all but sealed the outcome. Dylan Nguyen blasted a three-run homer in the second, and Grant Martin launched a grand slam in the third, part of a massive day at the plate. The onslaught continued with four more in the fourth and another four in the sixth, as the Saints racked up 13 hits while drawing six walks.

Owen Graves and Jaden Fuelling each contributed with extra-base hits, adding to the offensive barrage. Blake Bennett and Travis Weide also chipped in with key RBIs, helping AQ keep the pressure on Olivet throughout the game.

While the bats stole the show, the Saints' pitching was just as dominant. A parade of arms kept Olivet at bay, with Ethan Pequette, Hudson Lubbers, and Mark Kalahar holding the Comets hitless through the first four innings. The bullpen closed it out without much trouble, allowing just four total hits while striking out 10.

Inside the Numbers (Game 2):

  • Grant Martin drove in five runs, including a grand slam.
  • Dylan Nguyen homered and drove in three, finishing with two hits.
  • The Saints had six different players score multiple runs.
  • AQ pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts and just one walk.

Coach's Comments:

Head Coach Chris LaMange praised his team's ability to forget Saturday and regroup for two big "W's" on Sunday:

"Very happy with how our team bounced back from a tough day on Saturday. Our pitchers led the way as 10 different pitchers combined to hold Olivet to three runs, which is pretty impressive considering they scored 34 runs in their doubleheader on Saturday. Now we prepare for a big week of conference play with six games in four days."

Up Next:

Aquinas will have a very busy week of baseball (weather permitting) with six WHAC games in four days, all on the road. Lawrence Tech will be the first trip on Wednesday, with game one at 1:00 PM with game two, 30 minutes after the final out of game one.
