GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Another week, another pair of Saints making their mark on the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC). As October gives way to November and the stakes continue to rise, Aquinas College Athletics has two more reasons to celebrate the Maroon and White.
Women's volleyball's Kami Morse and men's soccer's Fikret Hasovic have been named WHAC Players of the Week for their performances during the final week of October. For both student-athletes, the recognition is familiar territory, as each has now earned multiple conference weekly honors this fall.
And with championships and postseason opportunities on the horizon, neither is finished making an impact.
Kami Morse – Women's Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
There is a lot more to championship volleyball than the big swings and highlight-reel kills. Sometimes, the difference between winning and losing is the player making sure the ball never touches the floor.
For Aquinas, that player has been Kami Morse.
The Saints' defensive standout earned another WHAC Defensive Player of the Week honor after helping Aquinas complete a perfect 2–0 week in conference play.
Morse collected 35 digs and successfully handled 58 of her 61 serve receptions, committing just three reception errors for a .951 reception percentage.
Her week was highlighted by a 25-dig performance against Lawrence Tech, as the Saints battled through a dramatic five-set victory.
While the offensive numbers often grab the headlines, Morse's ability to keep rallies alive and provide quality first contacts has been a major ingredient in Aquinas' success.
The recognition is another chapter in an outstanding fall for Morse, who has established herself as a dependable presence in the Saints' back row.
Coach Ryan Campbell spoke glowingly about his senior libero.
"Kami is one of those players who does so many things that don't always show up in the headlines, but they make a huge difference in winning matches. Coach Ryan Campbell said, She takes a lot of pride in her defense and serve receive, and her consistency gives our entire team confidence. To see her recognized again is well deserved, especially at this point in the season."
Up Next: Morse and the Saints return to the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center to host crosstown rival Cornerstone in their final match of the regular season. With the WHAC championship on the line, Aquinas will look to finish the conference race in style and secure the crown in front of the home crowd.
Fikret Hasovic – Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week
When the calendar turns to postseason soccer, every opportunity matters, every goal becomes a little more valuable, and somebody has to rise to the occasion.
For Aquinas, Fikret Hasovic answered that call.
The Saints' offensive standout earned another WHAC Offensive Player of the Week award following a memorable performance in Aquinas' 3-1 WHAC Tournament quarterfinal victory over Cornerstone on Halloween.
Hasovic delivered a hat trick, accounting for all three Aquinas goals and helping the Maroon and White advance to the conference semifinals.
With the season on the line against a familiar crosstown rival, Hasovic provided the finishing touch the Saints needed to keep their postseason journey alive.
His latest honor adds to an already impressive fall, which has included multiple conference weekly awards and several significant offensive performances.
But perhaps the most important part of his season is still ahead.
"Fikret has a special ability to step up in big moments, and Saturday was a perfect example of that. To score three goals in a conference tournament game, especially against a rival like Cornerstone, says a lot about his confidence and composure, said Coach Luke Ruff. He's worked extremely hard to put himself in these positions, and I'm proud of the way he's continued to deliver for our team. The challenge now is to keep that momentum going."
Up Next: Hasovic and the Saints will travel to face Madonna on Saturday, November 7, in the WHAC Tournament semifinals. With a berth in the conference championship match at stake, Aquinas will look to take another step toward its postseason goals.
The Honors Keep Coming – Which Saint Will Be Next?
Week after week, Aquinas student-athletes continue to find their names among the WHAC's best. Morse and Hasovic are the latest repeat winners in a fall that has featured multiple Saints earning conference recognition, often in the same week.
With women's volleyball chasing a conference championship and men's soccer pursuing a tournament title, the opportunities for more memorable performances are far from over.
Two more awards are in the books. Who will be the next Saint to earn WHAC Player of the Week honors?
It's a great day to be a Saint!
