Back Against the Wall, Saints MVB Deliver: AQ Sweeps Defiance in Must-Win Moment

Zero Margin, Full Response: AQ Dominates Defiance to Keep Post-Season Hopes Alive

Grand Rapids, Mich. — Sports can be so hard to explain.

Tuesday, following a four-set loss to Lawrence Tech, there was not a lot of joy in the vans on the ride home. In fact, by a miscalculation, the team was under the impression that they were eliminated from the postseason. At practice on Thursday, they were told that they are still alive—but with zero margin for error and in need of some help. But first, they had to take care of business.

On Friday night inside the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center, the Saints did exactly that.

Aquinas 3, Defiance 0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-19)

With their season hanging in the balance, Aquinas delivered one of its most complete performances of the year, sweeping Defiance in straight sets and flipping the script from an earlier four-set loss to the Yellow Jackets.

The Saints set the tone early, jumping out to a commanding first-set victory behind a balanced offensive attack and relentless pressure at the net. AQ hit efficiently throughout the night, finishing with a .373 attack percentage while holding Defiance to a negative hitting mark.

Offensively, it was a full-team effort led by Jayden Sturdevant, who paced the Saints with 10 kills while hitting .421. Joseph Hodgson was dominant in the middle, putting down eight kills on a blistering .615 hitting percentage and adding a team-high six block assists.

Alexander Rodriguez added six kills and contributed on both sides of the net, while Jonathan Collins chipped in five kills with an efficient .400 hitting clip. Connor Staats provided steady production on the outside with seven kills, helping AQ maintain offensive rhythm throughout all three sets.

Running the show was setter Ryden Luedtke, who orchestrated the offense with 36 assists, consistently putting his hitters in position to succeed. Defensively, Gage Dinges anchored the back row with nine digs, while Andrew Jones added seven digs in a strong all-around performance.

At the net, Aquinas controlled the match with 18 block assists, disrupting Defiance's rhythm and forcing the Yellow Jackets into difficult swings all night long.

From start to finish, the Saints played with urgency, energy, and precision—the exact formula required in a "play today or go home" scenario.

Saints Snapshots
     • Win-or-Go Mode: AQ responded to postseason pressure with a sweep, hitting .373 as a team and committing just 10 errors.
     • Middle Mayhem: Hodgson's .615 night paired with six block assists led a front-row unit that dictated the match.
     • Balanced Attack: Five Saints recorded five or more kills, showcasing a diversified offense that Defiance couldn't key on.
     • Floor Defense: Dinges (9 digs) and Jones (7 digs) steadied the back row and fueled transition opportunities.
     • Net Control: 18 block assists tell the story—AQ owned the tape and forced Defiance into a negative hitting night.

Coach's Comments
After the match, Head Coach Michael Crane was pleased with the performance but made it clear that this is the expectation moving forward.

"This is who we are capable of being every single night," Crane said. "I loved the urgency, the communication, and the way we controlled the match from the service line to the net. We didn't just win—we played the right way. Now the challenge is bringing that same level again on Saturday when the stakes are even higher."

Up Next
