Mike Masten enters 2022-23 in his fourth season as the Aquinas men's and women's head golf coach. Masten is coming off a great 2021-22 season that resulted in both the men's and women's team placing third in the WHAC Championships. The men also placed third in the WHACÂ the previous 2020-21 season, while the women placed fourth that season.Â
The entire golf program has seen a good bit of success since Masten took the reins of the program. Over the past three seasons, the men's have has had two first-place finishes, seven second-place finishes, and five third-place finishes across all events. That number is good for 14 top-three team placements. The women have seen one first-place finish, two second-place finishes, and eight third place finishes across all competitions, good for 11 top-three placements.Â
Additionally, Masten has coached several athletes to first-place individual tournament placements since taking over the program in 2019.Â
The Saints have been well-represented over the past three years in terms of individual WHAC awards. Masten led the 2019-2020 men's WHAC Golfer of the Year. The Saints' men have also had three All-WHAC First Team athletes, four All-WHAC Second Team Athletes, and four WHAC Golfers of the Week over the past three years. The women's golf program has also seen indivudal success over the past three years with two All-WHAC First Team golfers and one All-WHAC Second Team golfer.Â
Of the course, the entire program has done very well in the classroom. Since 2019, the men's golf program has had ten WHAC All-Academic student-athletes come through the program. The women's program has awarded seven WHAC All-Academic athletes as well. Both teams have been awarded as an NAIA Scholar teams multiple times.Â
Masten's prior coaching duties have given him valuable knowledge of Michigan, along with experience in the WHAC and NAIA. He has extensive experience working in the golf industry as a teacher, club professional, and instructor. While serving as head coach at Cleary in the 2017 and 2018 seasons, he also was the Director of Golf at Arbor Hills Golf Club.
During his career at Cleary, he helped the men's program finish in second place at the 19-team USCAA National Championship Tournament in State College, Penn. The Cougar men also won the eight-team Lourdes Invitational the following spring. In the 2018-19 seasons, Cleary earned three top-three tournament finishes, including a third-place showing at the USCAA National Tournament.
In addition to his previous roles at Cleary and at Arbor Hills Golf Club, Masten has experience at Timber Trace Golf Club (as General Manager), Tee Box Golf Simulators (Manager, Instructor, Sales), The Grande Golf Club (First Assistant, Golf Professional), Lakelands Golf and Country Club (Outside Services Manager), and Arrowhead Country Club (First Assistant, Golf Professional).
Masten earned a Bachelors of Science degree from Western Michigan in 2006 and earned his Associates Degree from the Golf Academy of America in 2007 with a major in golf complex operations and merchandising and sales.Â
