Joining the Aquinas coaching staff prior to the 2020 season, Bill has been involved in coaching softball since 1978. He was the varsity coach at Tri County High school from 1978-1986, where his teams won six league championships during his tenure. He also taught sixth grade and coached junior varsity football at Tri County. Bill left Tri County and went to Kent City Schools in 1986, where he taught seventh grade social studies and was the varsity softball coach and varsity football coach. His softball teams at Kent City won six league championships and seven district championships, while the 1989 team lost in the state semifinals and his 1990 team lost in the state championship game.
Bill’s teams have won over 500 games and in 1997, he was inducted into the Michigan Softball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Bill spent his last 10 years in education as an administrator at Cedar Spring Middle School. While at Cedar Springs, Bill umpired high school softball and umpired in the state finals twice.
Coach VanHorn has run pitching camps in western and northern Michigan for over 25 years. After retirement, he served as the pitching coach at Grand Rapids Community College and for the varsity softball team at Cedar Springs.
Bill has been married to his wife, Sara for 47 years. Sara and Bill enjoy antiques, swimming in their pool, and hanging out with their grandkids. They have two daughters, Allison and Lisa, and also have eight grandchildren.
