Joey Sutherlin joined the Aquinas Athletic Department in January of 2025 and serves as the Director of Athletic Communications. Sutherlin comes to Aquinas with over thirty years of experience in athletics, having worked at Grand Rapids Community College, Advance Sports, West Michigan Whitecaps, Michigan Sports Radio, and East Kentwood High School.
As Director of Communications, Sutherlin is responsible for all content on the AQsaints website, athletic, social media, and all phases of the Sports Information office. Sports Information responsibilities include public relations, publications, game operations, website management, media relations, record keeping, statistics, supervising webcasting of appropriate events, and updating all statistics.
Sutherlin was born and raised in the Grand Rapids area. He has been involved in athletics, from youth sports to high school and college athletics to minor league baseball. Some of his prior stops include working for the Advance Newspaper as a sports reporter, Vice President of Northern Little League, Sports Information Director for Grand Rapids Community College, Play-by-play announcer for Michigan Sports Radio and the Biscuit in the Basket Network, Official Scorer for the West Michigan Whitecaps, Head Coach for the East Kentwood Men’s Water Polo Team, Vice-President of the MWPA (Water Polo Association), and most recently, Aquatics Director and Assistant Athletic Director for Kentwood Public Schools.
Sutherlin has won numerous awards, including the Donald Adamson Award, a pacemaker, Coach of the Year, and a lifetime service award from the MWPA.
Joey lives in Cuttlerville with his wife, Kim. They have three children, three grandchildren, and two dogs.
