The Aquinas women's volleyball team fell in the final two sets of Saturday's (Oct. 19) road match in Fort Wayne, dropping the third and fourth sets by the minimum two points apiece, as Indiana Tech claimed the 3-1 conference victory. AQ evened the match with a second set win, but could not take down the Warriors, falling by scores of 14-25, 25-19, 23-25, and 23-25.
Aquinas was looking for an exclamation point to a tough conference week, but was unable to notch its third straight impressive win, after sweeping Cornerstone and toppling UNOH in five sets on Friday night (Oct. 18). The Saints are 11-11 overall and 8-5 in WHAC play. AQ falls one match behind Indiana Tech in the league standings, as the Warriors are 9-4 in conference action, but a very impressive 21-6 overall. The season series is now split, as Aquinas defeated Indiana Tech in five sets on Sept. 21 in Grand Rapids.
After the Warriors won set one and AQ responded with a strong second set, the Saints led set three by a 22-19 score. However, Indiana Tech rattled off six of the final seven points to steal the win and move ahead in the match, 2-1.
It appeared the Warriors would put away Aquinas in set four, claiming a 22-17 advantage, but AQ scored five straight points – starting with a
Maddie Ingraham kill and ending with a
Payton Klein/
Kali Crawford combined block – to tie the set at 22-all. It would be tied at 23-23 after another Ingraham kill, but the Warriors notched the final two points to duplicate their 25-23 third set win.
Indiana Tech led in most statistical categories on Saturday, including a .229 hitting percentage and 56 kills, while Aquinas hit .165 with 40 kills. The Warriors also led in total blocks (7-5), assists (51-37), and digs (68-51). AQ served very well on Saturday, to the tune of an 11-6 advantage in that category.
Ingraham led the Saints with 11 kills, one off of her season-high. She hit .292 and added a pair of digs. Both Klein and
Kylie Christensen recorded nine kills; Klein supplied three digs, two aces, and a block, while Christensen provided four block assists and two digs.
Jackie Rozell filled out her statline with seven kills, five service aces, four digs, and three block assists. Crawford delivered 31 assists, six digs, two kills, and a block.
Karly Morris picked up a team-high 13 digs and added two aces, while
Sam VanHouten posted 10 digs.
Olivia Martinelli served a pair of aces and
Meredith Kraus posted five digs, two kills, and a block.
Aquinas returns to Grand Rapids to begin a three-match homestand, starting next Friday (Oct. 25), when the Saints host Lawrence Tech (12-0 WHAC) at 7:00 p.m.
