Box Score 3 The women's hockey team traveled to Springfield, Missouri this weekend for a three-game tournament at the ASU Showcase hosted by Arizona State University. The Saints come back to Grand Rapids with a 1-2 record at the event, but with a pair of impressive showings, including a tournament ending win over University of Utah. The Saints are now 2-4 on the season.Â
Aquinas opened the event on Friday night with a match-up against the host Sun Devils, an ACHA D1 power. The Sun Devils scored early to make it 1-0, and added a goal early in the second-period to make it 2-0 quickly. The Saints would answer back with a goal midway through the second by
Mikayla Oppermann off of a
Maria Maguire assist. The Sun Devils took control of the game by scoring three quick goals to start the third to take a 5-1 lead, but the Saints would battle back. With just under three minutes remaining,
Natalie Vaitas scored from a
Gabby Fournier assist to make it 5-2, and just over a minute later the Saints made it 5-3 with a goal by
Morgan Kozar. Unfortunately that would be all the Saints could manage before the clock hit zero and the comeback would come up short. Goaltender
Ally Kennedy stood tall with 33 saves in net for the Saints, who's three goals against ASU are the most the Sun Devils have allowed this year.
The next afternoon the Saints took on the University of Colorado, but were topped by the Buffaloes by a final of 10-0. Kennedy finished with 25 saves in a game where the Saints were outshot 35-9.
The Saints would be tested with an early wake up and skate this morning, competing at 7:00am CST against the University of Utah to conclude the three-game event. AQ was ready for the challenge, scoring midway through the first-period to take an early 1-0 lead. It was
Tori Feddema who found the back of the net, with
Alyssa Buzar on the assist. The Utes would even things up early in the second with a goal just three minutes into the action in the second period, but the Saints would regain the lead at 2-1 with a
Morgan Kozar goal to open the third. The freshman's goal would hold up and end up as the game-winner, as the Saints topped the Utes 2-1 to finish the weekend on a high note. Kennedy once again was strong in net, stopping 18 of 19 shots she faced.Â
Aquinas is back in action in two weeks when they travel to Oxford, Ohio to take on Miami (OH) on November 1st and 2nd.Â
