The women's soccer team won its fifth straight game by defeating the visiting Rochester Warriors tonight 6-0. The win improves the Saints to 12-2-1 on the season and 7-1 in WHAC play. They remain tied for second-place in the conference standings.
It took a while for the Saints to find their groove in the first-half, as Aquinas was able to control possession and create a lot of shooting opportunities, but outside of a
Jenna Smith blast that hit the woodwork there was not much on goal for the Saints. As Aquinas began to figure out the Warrior defense, they created more quality scoring opportunities, and finally capitalized in the 34th minute when
Katelyn Kahael scored off of a feed from
Abby Frankhouse. Seven minutes later the Saints would double the lead with a goal by Frankhouse after connecting with a cross from Maddie Gryzbek.
After taking a 2-0 lead into the half, the Saints wasted no time putting the game away early in the second, as
Hannah Bowling put home the Saints' third goal after receiving a nice dish from
Raegan Radaz. The goal was the first of the year for Bowling. Aquinas made it 4-0 when
Filippa Struxsjo collected a loose ball out front, and managed to sneak it past the Warrior goalkeeper in the mess in the box. Struxsjo would strike again just over ten minutes later, this time taking a feed from Radaz and converting her second goal and Raegan's second assist of the night.
Jenna Smith would cap the scoring for the Saints after hammering a blast from outside the box that took a deflection but still beat the Warrior keeper for the Saints' sixth goal.
Saga Rydback was credited with the assist on the play.Â
The Saints outshot the Warriors 35-12 on the night, while earning nine corner-kicks. Goalkeepers
Braeleigh McCoy and
Taryn Webb combined for the Saints ninth shutout of the season in net. McCoy made three stops in her 63 minutes of action. Webb came on in relief and made five saves in 27 minutes of action, including a pair of dramatic diving stops on wide open Warrior players to keep the shutout intact.Â
Aquinas travels to Livonia on Saturday for a huge matchup in the WHAC standings. The Saints and Crusaders are tied in second-place in the WHAC with identical 7-1 records. Last season the Crusaders won the regular season matchup 1-0, but the Saints got revenge in the Conference Tournament finals, winning 3-0 to advance to the National Tournament. Game time this Saturday is set for 1:00 pm.Â
